Im looking for a new 6' cutter. Looking at all name brands like woods, bush hog, brown, land pride, rhino etc. Currently ive had or used BH squealer, BH 286, king cutter and deere mx6. The Deere mows the best but has had the most problems and is the newest. Its a strange design as it has a good heavy deck and blades ect but has the gear box of a light duty unit. Seems to cut very good and follows the ground well too. The squealer also cuts good but not as good as deer. Its been a solid unit and is about 7 years old. Looking for a medium duty 6' cutter for a ford 3910 tractor. Want good grass cutter but also solid medium duty for brush. So how does Rhino, Brown, and Land Pride cut and hold up? How do they compare to what i have used?

Thoughts?

Perhaps you should look at the John Deere 25A flail mowers as a viable option?
There are many good used ones available that turn up on tractorhouse and
other sellers web pages.
I can tell you from personal experience the 25A flail mower can quickly go
from shredding brush to mowing lawns at a 2 inch height with no changes.

If you hadn't said you had or used a Bush Hog 286, I would have suggested one (or the current equivalent). I have used Bush Hogs since 1960. I now have a ten year old one that has been very satisfactory since it was new. I also have a Squealer that is only a little younger, and I have no complaints. They are not the lowest priced, and I don't know about quality since BH changed hands a few years ago, but if I needed another mower I would buy a BH.

I agree. I would buy another 286 if they made them still just not sure about the new 296 series. I like the weight of the landpride 2672 as its somewhat lighter than the others. Also will have to look at flail mowers as i dont know anything about them.

I recently looked at a 296 when I was shopping and the craftsmanship looked as good as the 286 we have at work. Also the deck is several inches deeper I believe. I would be proud to own one, just couldn't afford it.

The 296 does look good. Also looks like a beast. Anyone know how they cut grass? Im sure they will wear some brush out.

Look hard at the Brown 472. I can't say how well it mows "grass" as I only mow brush and saplings. It's a heck of a well built unit though. If I recall correctly, it has a faster blade tip speed than some others mentioned, leading me to believe it would give a nicer cut with sharp blades. The brown is very comparable to the BH, only it's a bit heavier duty. Regardless, none will give you a finish cut like a finish mower, they're not meant for that. I'm also interested in the flail mowers.

I have a Landpride 2672 which is a medium duty cutter and is advertised to cut up to 3", I have worked my real hard and it has been good. It has a 130 hp gear box.
