I've got a one year old Kubota. The L4240 has 37 PTO HP. I've read the threads recommending 5 hp/foot of mower, but others that say this may be overkill.

An eight foot mower would be just pushing the 5hp/' rule here. There is a used JD MX8 at auction coming up. It's a lift version. Does the lift version mean that this "borderline" mower is too big for the tractor? Deere's own website recommends 50 PTO HP for this mower, which I obviously don't have. Anyone running a similar setup?

I only have a 5' rough cut. You can't tell it is behind the tractor. With the tractor at 540 pto running the rough cut I only saw it drop to 536 pto. I think Kubota recommends a 6' for the L4240.

I'd recommend keeping to a 7ft cutter unless you're doing a lot of open pasture mowing with plenty of weight on the front.

Definitely make sure your front is heavy. Last summer I had to use a borrowed tractor/brush hog and spent a lot of time standing up and leaning forward on the hood to get the front down.
Front wheels don't steer well in the air.

by lift version do you mean it has a hydraulic cylinder that raises and lowers the rear mower wheels instead of lifting with the 3 point. If it is that style i think that would be more suitable for your tractor than a 3 point 8 foot mower.I think you will have hard time keeping your front tires on the ground with a mower of that size if you have to carry the full weight of the mower on the 3 point.power wise you should be able to run it ok if grass isnt more than a foot and a half or so but in heavy tall grass and brush you will want more hp.

Tend to agree with haywire cattle company, look at your manual and I think you will exceed your limits on the 3PH, I run an 1100 pound Land Pride RCR2672 with my L5740 HSTC and would not want to put an MX8 1670 pounds on the 3PH, pull type "might" be OK if you don't cut heavy stuff. My manual says don't exceed 7' though I think I could spin an 8'.

It is a 3 point. I didn't even think about the weight of the implement maxing out the 3 point hydraulics. Looks like the consensus is that it's too much mower.

I have a JD1008 which is the older model version of the MX models. it's a 10ft so might be 300lb heavier than an MX8. I add 650lbs of weight to the front of my M9540 to carry it. Your 4240, if it will lift it, isn't going to like that cutter at all!!! Unless you can steal it dirt cheap and then trade it for something you can use, I'd let it go. By steal it I mean buy it for less than $2K if it's in very good condition.

I have a Kubota L4400 and my Operators Manual states a 6 foot rotary mower.

Yeah, I had a 4400 and it handled a 6ft very easily. Could have ran a 7'. But would have definitely struggled with a mounted 8' because of weight. Maybe a semi-mounted or pull type.
