Tiller size

I have a massey 1532 with a tire width of 58 inches. Trying to decide on what tiller size to go with.plan on a king kutter tiller...options are 5ft (60 inches) or the 6 ft (72) inch tiller . The 5 ft would probably cover tire tracks but is that cutting it to close? Not sure if 22hp pto is enough for the 6 ft...soil type is generally good with little clay at the 7 inch depth...HELP me decide

Clay (if there's a high % of it) can make for some tough soil conditions. It compacts when moist and when dry it can be... well, as hard as clay! With only 22hp and maybe challenging soil conditions - I'd go with a 5 foot tiller.

I'd rather have more tractor than more implement... with a margin that favors the tractor in all conditions! That way, I know I'm not likely to be working the dog crap outta my tractor.

Get the 72!---I use my 72 KK on IH 706 BUT have used it on the IH 404 , about half the hp of the 706,but you also have to set the shoes to half depth then make a second pass to get the max. that the tiller will go!---I think manual says something like 40 hp max, so the 70+ hp of the big tractor is probably a bit much but you gotta be careful what you run into in your ground!--- it dont like big rocks/concrete chunks/ etc--but clean ground is smooth sailing!
Run as slow as you can and give the tiller a chance to really grind up the ground and 1 pass you will be ready to plant!
I would love to have an 84" or widerfor the 706! thanks; sonny 580

I'm running a 5' KKII behind my 62" wide tire tractor with 26.5 PTO hp and I've managed to bog it down in wet, almost solid clay soil.
With the tractor you describe, I'd stick with the 5' - you'll be plenty wide enough to take out your tire tracks and have enough power for almost any normal soil conditions.

I use the kk 5' from tsc behind my jd 2320, 18hp @ pto. It works great but definitely the max width for the hp. I'm contemplating upgrading to the jd 2520 for other reasons, but I would not think of buying 6' tiller if I do decide with the larger tractor(20hp@pto). Ymmv.

I use a 5' Howard behind my x749 but don't recommend it, 30 pto hp works great for a 5' tiller. A 2720 would handle the 5' tiller alot better than a 2520 imo.

Go with the 5' it is all you need and all the tractor wants.

The 6-foot King Kutter is about all my Kubota L3400 (geared) can handle in our soil. It carries a few more horsepower than your Massey in about the same size package.
In previously tilled soil, no problem. The slip clutch gets a workout in new ground. We have clay.

Hydrostat you can go slow so as not to bite off too much at one time. You need to check weight of unit and the lift capacity of your tractor. I tried to use a 60 inch Howard on my B2710 and was unable to lift it. I use a 62 in Landpride with no problem.

I pull a 5' KK with my GC2400 18pto hp and It pulls it easy even in red clay. I run about 1500 rpm and have no problems at all. 540 pto is about 2400 rpm.
