How much HP for a 12' disk?

   / How much HP for a 12' disk? #31
I just looked in my owners manual and it said max 84" wide and 880 lbs. for a disc harrow. I have a 50 hp Kubota.

I'll add two cents into the pot. MY FIL bought a 16' john deere transport disc and I got the opportunity to play with it in some freshly plowed ground. I didn't quite have enough adjustment in the hitch to get it to pull level, but my 5083 would pull it although it was slower than I wanted to be going. I was pulling dirt up over the axle on the pans so I have some more tweaking to do, but It wasn't impossible. I did have to keep my hand on the hydraulics to keep from burying the tractor a couple times though, especially up hill in the soft stuff.

I think he paid over 1k for that 16' so i would def think you can't go wrong for $600. If nothing else, re-sell/scrap it and try another one. Make sure your tires are loaded, air pressure set correctly and some front ballast. That can make a huge difference in tractor pulling ability.

Down here in my neck of the woods if you gang a 12' harrow where it is cutting anything but straight 5hp per foot would be pushing it, as someone else already stated people look at it differently, some think that if they are scratching the surface that they are harrowing.:D

Howdy,
For a proper disc usage, you need more tractor and HP for a 12' disc.
I run a sunflower 1211 disc behind a JD6430 prem. It takes everything the tractor has. Then again, I am not scratching the surface. Heavy clay type soil, with the disc up to the gangs.

Changing hay type in the field?
spray kill, wait 6 weeks, spray kill, then no-till drill your seed. done

How much that disc weigh? Notched blades, 24"? I've got sandy loam soil - heavy on the sand... If that 16' didn't weigh more than about 3,000lbs - I'd hook to it with my 5075M up here in my fields - when dry!

Not in a heavy clay field... though!

I tried to convince my neighbor that she could re-establish their timothy fields with a Roundup treatment. She acted like I'd cussed her mother!! Didn't want no poison on her ground! Ok... ok.

Heaviest disc harrow I'd ever seen was a Rome disk plow. They come in lot's of different configurations but that's what's commonly found on highway road jobs. The lighter ones they pull with 530hp 9000 series and the ones with some "heft" they hitch 'em to the D-10's.

Come on now, I can pull one of those with my 16hp Sears garden tractor.  ;)

This is one of my favorite units.

We used to have some IH 37 disc harrows that we used after plowing with the heavy discs(IH 500 series) to smooth and pulverize. They are pretty good disc, not really light weight but no where near a heavy breaking disc like the 500 series. It would take 100+ HP to pull a 14 foot IH 500 series in heavy soil. I think the 37 would work well for breaking up a pasture, might take 2 or more passes if you are wanting to kill everything and a spiked tooth harrow pulled over the ground after plowing would break up any sod/clods. Discs pull easier in the fall than in the spring so if you pulled it OK in the fall , you may have to carry it some in the spring doing the same chore.
