Thanks to everyone for all the good info!! I personally think we should make an offer for both discs, fix the nicer of the two and keep any usable parts of the other then scrap the rest. It sounds like we should be able to pull these discs enough the do what we want and if not, we should easily be able to get our money back. On the other hand, I have found an Allis Chalmers 9' not too far away for 900. Not sure of model or condition but may call about it before making a decision. In the end, I'm going to let my FIL decide what we buy, but wanted to be as informed as I could be about what we are buying, Because I'm kind of "in training" to be a big part of the hay/cattle.. We raise enough beef to feed our immediate family, and any excess hay gets sold to pay for the feed. Works out pretty well most years, and I sure don't want to go back to store bought beef.

Get yourself a Shoup catalog and look up prices for what you think the disks might need as parts can get a bit dear. Shoup handles all the common wear parts for virtually all brands. I pull a 13 foot Case disk, 18" blades, behind my L5740 kubota but it is quite a load in some conditions and I need to sometimes lower the wheels a bit in tough spots until I get it worked evenly. This is disking plowed ground. I have 4 pieces of railroad rail about 8 feet long for ballast and to strengthen the frame. Once I get the plowed field worked up the weight will sink the blades in to the spools in our heavy clay. I wish I had more power but the tractor is what I have and the disk was free except for repairs I have made. We bought this disk back in the '50s when we bought a 52 belt HP Case 400 Super Diesel. The L5740 has about the same power but is lighter in weight than that old Case, and it loses in efficiency being a hydro against a straight no frills gear transmission. Blade diameter really counts in how hard it will pull but my guess from the pictures is the disks have 18" blades which are shown as one of the options in the pecs you posted. Looking at the frames you might want to add ballast to get the disks to cut in on the job you describe. The specs give the amount of ballast they will handle.

    Howdy,
I know there are some huge disc out there.
The sunflower 1211 12ft is a heavy finishing disc. In the heavy clay soil, with it running as deep up to the gangs, it pulls hard. After running this disc, I run over the ground with a Brillion Cultipacker MLS-1803. Smooth out all the bumps nicely.
