Purchased a 2 row JD flex 71 corn planter last fall. Using it for sweet corn.

I used the planter for the 1st time this weekend.

One unit works fine. The other unit pushes the seed out the side of the can, not into the seed drop tube that puts the seed between the cutters. The opening is 1 ス inches on the unit that pushes seed out to the side and 1 1/8 inches on the one works fine. Both have the number B29473; however, the 1 ス also has M2-2 WF stamp on it. The 1 1/8 inch has 7-2 stamped on it. I have tried switching the cans on the units and trying to align the openings with the drop tube, but still throws the seed out the side.

Anybody have any idea or ever seen this problem before

When you switched the one seed bins to the other side was it the original clogged side still missing or was it the same bin just on the other side now? The seed bins break down further to the point. I'm not positive with the 71's but they still have seed plates in them. That would be my guess. Might have had some old seed in the bin that got moldy and soft and clogged it.

Another problem I have with my JD drill (its not a 71 with disc openers) is that the bottom of the seed tube once in a great while will get clogged with dirt. You can clean it out by shoving a screwdiver up and breaking up the dirt. 71's shouldn't do that since they aren't a shoe planter but its worth checking out.

It's the same seed bin. Doesn't matter which side I put it on. The 1 1/2 inche opening creates a space that allows the seed to be pushed out the side before it goes down the tube. Last night I plugge this gap with a small piece of wood as I tightened down the bin to the unit. It worked. It will be a pain when I need to change the seed plant, but better than spending $100+ for a new bottom with the smaller opning.

Thanks for the reply super55. I used to have JD 246 that had the shoe and it would get clogged. Sometimes it would clog and unclog while planting. I would only realize it when the corn came up and there was a big bare spot, then a large clump of corn growing in one spot.

Glad to hear you got it work. I know lincoln ag products sell a spacer backer plate for seed plate but usually that is only used for only really small seeds such as sugar beets. I don't know if it would even help you in this situation.

Just think of all the time you will have to think of a better way to fix it while planting. :)

Just found out that the bottom with the wider opening is a peanut bottom and the smaller opening is the standard corn and soybean bottom.
