Here is the way planting corn works for us: First you buy your seed corn, then you match plates to your seed corn size. Usually, the seed corn seller has the most common brand plates for what he is selling. Here in Ky, we buy or borrow the plates from the seller of the seed corn. How does this work out in your neck of the woods? Ken Sweet

When I planted corn I only planted 7ac so I just used the old horse drawn two row planter swapped over to 3ph. Used the same plates every year.

I already have the planter and plates are hard to come by, so I try to buy the seed size for the plates. The plater is a 50 year old Cole. People just don't seem to let go of the plates. Most want to sell the whole planter with what plates they have. I have corn plates and bean and pea plates for it.

Yea, That is what I do also, however, if you have a planter you have never used before, do you buy plates first and then go buy seed corn or do you buy corn and then go buy plates to match? Ken Sweet

Do you own a Cole 12 MX? IF so new plates are still available.

Back when I was on the farm 1960's the Cannery that contracted to buy the corn supplied the plates and specified the corn to plant. This was for canning corn (canned or frozen). They also specified how many acres and when to plant and scheduled the harvest. Field inspections for growing conditions and infestations were also done by the contracting cannery. Same with all the crops for Cannery contracting.

To the big time farmers around here plates are a thing of the past.Buy a old jd 71 style planter and check out all of the auctions and e bay. Plates can be modefided by triming the edges and beveling the opening. Steel plates are the oldes.

I was in the same boat, brother. I had a mounted JD planter when I planted corn with a John Deere M. The planter had seen better days so, I rigged an old mule drawn planter to the lift. It did an excellent job and went on much easier than the one designed for the tractor. I believe I used the plate we already had.

Ken,
I'd think that if a farmer was dead set on planting a particular size seed he'd buy the plates last. If he knew no other plates were available, he'd have to buy corn to match the ones he had.
