coffeeman....You know what I did with mine....I went to the John Deere dealer and bought 5 tubes of 00 Cornhead grease and filled my gearbox on my Bush hog brand bush hog with that...It is and has always worked just fine and has no leaks...you can Google corn head grease ...it is not expensive....Just what I did...

I replaced a seal on a Woods Cadet shreader. The hardest part was getting the blade holder off the shaft. I borrowed a 2 jaw puller from our dealer for that.

Done a few seals on gearboxes and it is not too bad. Once the blade is off it is fairly easy. Just take your time and puller and heat will make getting the blade off much easier. Just make sure when you replace the seal you get it in straight to start!

The gearbox/support plate/drive pulley assembly must come off the deck as a unit after the belt is removed from the drive pulley. The assembly will weigh somewhere between 80 and 100 lbs, I'd estimate. Then the pulley must be removed to access the seal and stake nut. Several dealers have online parts diagrams; a search will easily bring one up.

I happen to own an RM990 and replaced both gearbox seals before putting the mower away last Fall.

Right on the money. I liked the idea of cornnead grease. I tried power steering fluid and grease. I hoped steering fluid and grease would plug things up. No work. I then did what I shoulda done to begin with. I shot out and picked up a new seal and for 2 bucks I bought a new snap ring just in case we crap up the one in machine. My son-in-law jumped in and took apart. No pullers and nothing hard to do. Pulley came off easy. Seal was easy. One thing, as you mentioned, gearbox and pulley must be taken off together for easy going. I did watch only, as I don't have pick up power after a long hospital stay. My strength inproves most every day. Overall, changing seal on Woods rm990 is easy compaired to what I thought it might be. Woods is a good machine.

Did that. One thing comes to mind, though. While attempting to Mickey Mouse things with grease and steering stop leak, I wonder if residue of power steering stop leak might hurt new seal somehow. Stop leak was about 1/2 leaked out during trial "fix it" run. I would guess it shouldn't hurt new seal. However, I think the reason stop leak works is because it's made to swell the old seal. I wonder if I should change gearbox grease or is that over kill? When job was done, had to add a quart 90wt to full up.
By the way, don't take comment toward Mickey as a knock against him. He is one of my favorites. Always smiling and in a good mood. A nice guy to have around.
