Kubota L4610
I just bought a kubota l4610 with a bradco 511 backhoe on it. The backhoe has a 12" bucket on it which I am sure will be useful for trenching and digging roots and things.

We have 41 acres in the pine barrens of south jersey and are going to be building a house on the land. Our soil is pretty much only soft sand. I think I want to get a bigger bucket for digging with, but I'm not sure what size would be most useful. I was thinking 24" but I don't know. Any thoughts or tips? This is my first backhoe and I don't really have any experience using a backhoe or mini excavator to go off of. I really just don't want to buy the wrong thing.

Also, how do I know what buckets are compatible? Do I have to buy a bradco bucket? Or are there other options?

I would tend to do some digging with it and decide then. I have a Bradco 611 with a 12" bucket and I thought I would get more buckets when I bought it, but found I could dig fast enough with the 12". I do mostly maintenance digging. If you have some big work, yes you need a bigger bucket.

For just plain moving dirt, a 24" bucket is great. But they make all the different widths for a reason. Just what is it that you need it for? We have a 580 Case. We have 13", 16" and
24" buckets and would like to get a 30". All are intended for different purposes. I believe that you will need to purchase either a Bradco bucket of an aftermarket bucket built for your Bradco hoe. I don't know for sure, but it is common for the buckets of different manufactures to NOT INTERCHANGE. :(

Didn't really help you out, but maybe gave you something else to think about. ;)

I have a bradco, not sure on number but 8 1/2 foot. It came with an 18" digging bucket. I picked up a 36" CAT bucket with no teeth, was from a mini excavator I think. It has a grading blade on the back side for pushing as well. I bought it cheap thinking I would mod it to fit, pinned right on with no mods. It is super sweet for digging soft ground and grading around with. It actually digs pretty well if no big rocks or roots. If I ever changed hoes I would look for a similar setup with a narrow digging bucket and a wider smooth bucket. Works awesome

Thanks, guys. I will do some digging with the 12" and see how it is before I do anything. I think the 12" will be great for trenching in the power and phone to the house and probably will be god for digging out tree roots.

Just bought a 509 for the Mahindra and got the 20" bucket for moving large volumes of dirt. I have used it some as it is still pretty wet in the Delta but what I have done with it works great and moves lots of dirt.
