Adding power beyond... now or later?

Hi All,

I've got my 2006 John deere 2210 in the shop getting serviced, and one of the things they discovered was that the grease fitting on the drive shaft that connects the engine to the transmission was not positioned correctly--it's simply impossible to get to. So, they're going to have to tear the tractor apart to reach the drive shaft, reposition the grease fitting, and then in the future I (or anyone) can grease it without tearing the tractor apart.

It's well out of warranty, so no help from John Deere on fixing the improperty assembly. I bought this tractor used in 2011 and it only had 170 hours on it at the time.

I've thought about having them add a power beyond kit while the tractor is already apart. It would save me a few bucks (not much, maybe $30?) in labor. Someday I would like to add a 260 backhoe. I understand I could also run a log splitter off the power beyond kit.

Is there any other use I could get out of a power beyond kit, besides a "someday" backhoe, and a log splitter? If I could find some use for a power beyond kit today, I'm more inclined to have them do it. If the only things I could use it for are a backhoe and a log splitter, I'll probably just wait until I'm ready to actually get a backhoe and get it done all at once.

I could try installing it myself... but these days I am pretty short on time. I haven't been able to find installation instructions--but if I did, and it doesn't look to complicated, I might be willing to give it a shot.

Anything you can connect to the tractor that requires hydraulics can be run off the rear remotes. Hydraulic top and tilt are probably the number one thing.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the terminology, "power beyond" is not at all like rear remotes, and cannot be used for things like top and tilt. It simply provides a constant supply of hydraulic oil to a rear implement (e.g., a backhoe). The implement itself needs to have it's own control valves to either allow the oil to return to the tractor, or e.g., divert the oil to move a hydraulic ram if you push on appropriate backhoe control. Or, a log splitter that had its own control valves.

So a "power beyond" kit would only work with a top and tilt if you also added a control valve for your top and tilt... is there such a thing?

You are correct, but that's no big deal. All you do is add a single spool valve mounted to the rear of the tractor (beside the seat?) and hook up whatever device cylinder you want. If you have something like a splitter with it's own valve, you just connect the hoses to that valve instead of the one you added.

Have the dealer make it a "true" rear remote while they are adding the power beyond. It will cost a few dollars more, but then you will have the availability of the hydraulics and won't have to add anything at a later date.

Ask the dealer how much a second set of remotes cost. I started with one set on my tractor, and quickly found that a second set was definitley not an option, but a requirement for the equipment I'm using.

At this point I think I'm going to have to delay this until another time, because I just discovered the water pump on my truck is leaking coolant (failed--needed to be replaced), and so the money I was thinking about sinking into a power beyond kit right now is instead going to that. I have to be careful with my money, as we all do. Oh well! There will always be another time. Maybe next year.

I didn't know rear remotes were even a dealer-available option on John deere 2210. But I guess they could custom fabricate something up, just like any other machine shop. I've already had this particular dealer do some custom welding for me in order to make a 200CX hood guard fit when you mount a 210 loader on a 2210 tractor. The hood 200CX style hood guard interferes with the parking stand on the 210 loader--they can't both be on at the same time unless you modify the hood guard. They even made the modification look good with green paint :-)
