Well then get a down force kit or a hydraulic model for your skid steer.

If you have a lot of large rocks in your soil like I do, it may not be worth the purchase.

I have used one extensively, digging post holes and pilot holes for planting trees. They are an AMAZING tool! I don't own it, but a family member does so I have access when needed. You do NOT need down pressure. The most important thing you need is a sharp drilling "tip" which are either pinned or bolted on. I replaced the tip on this one because it was so dull it would barely penetrate my hard clay. As soon as I put the new tip on, it shoots into the ground like a drill.

My previous tractor was a Kioti CK20 with about 17pto hp and it only weighed around 2800lbs. The problem I had using it with that tractor is that you had to be careful to not let the auger drill in too quickly. As it spins it will dig down fast if you let it, and it will either bog down your tractor (if it isn't strong enough) or be difficult to pull out of the ground (again, based on your tractor). My new tractor doesn't have that problem and handles the auger with no effort.

I have found that if the rocks are small enough, the auger will pull them right up.

If you find one for a good price and you need holes dug, get one. You can drill a hole literally in like 10 seconds or less, it's amazing.

There are many people that would disagree with you about the down pressure. Maybe you should have said that "you don't need down pressure for your conditions"

I have used it in sand, good dirt, and rock hard Clay. I have pulled up large and small rocks.

Before I put a new drilling tip on it (roughly $35 @ TSC) it was a pain and I thought it needed down pressure.... But now you set it on the ground, spin it, and it digs. No down pressure needed

You don't live in Vermont where it is quite rocky.

If rocks are that much of a concern, then I would probably say that a non industrial post hole digger wouldn't work anyhow, with or without down pressure. You'll break the auger, or shear pins, or the gear box. They're not meant to dig thru rocks.

Know your application. Right tool- right job scenario.
