Default Why are attachments sold with half a PTO, or no PTO.

When I bought my tiller, they told me it only had half a PTO shaft. Fortunately by the time I picked it up, they had found the other half.

I just bought a JD Sickle. Got it loaded on the trailer, then started looking for the PTO... half a shaft. And, it turns out that it is rather hard to find the other half (1" square).

Drove about 150 miles pulling a trailer (also had other errands... but)... to look at a drum mower. The guy said it ran well, and that I could see it run on the tractor... Got there, and no PTO shaft. So, seeing it run on the tractor was basically seeing the 3pt hitch work.

    Ok, sorry... rant over....
It is just annoying to find a piece of equipment that is mostly there, but is missing something like half a PTO shaft. They are a pain to find and match up, and they aren't cheap.

Must be tweakers in the valley, half a PTO shaft is no PTO shaft and the price drops at least the retail price of a new shaft.

    Yes, used.
And, perhaps changed hands at least once since the stuff had last been used in the field.

    But...
It just seems like one would keep all the parts and pieces together.

Well, unless one is intentionally parting out a piece of equipment.

I don't think I would sell a used piece of equipment without listing upfront everything I knew was missing or broken, and would probably put an effort into making sure it was functioning at 100%.

Perhaps it has to do with some of the equipment that catches my eye.

I may have a baler for sale in a couple of months. Just missing a couple of insignificant pieces.
    Missing all the pickup teeth.
    Missing the Knotters.
    Missing the Needles.
    Missing the Wisconsin 4-Banger.
    Missing the bale tension system.
And, perhaps a few more parts.
    Wheels & Hubs?

You should be able to pick up all the missing pieces at your favorite tractor store, to make it as good as new.

Yea, that would tend to irritate me too.

Better not having ANY shaft at all. AND be upfront about it. Cause you spend as much getting 1/2 a shaft as you can get a whole new one for

Just one of the perils of being an implement bottom feeder.
i'm thinking I'd probably learn to ask if the PTO shaft is complete or not before driving to inspect/buy.

My attachment manuals say when storing attachments to separate the PTO shaft so it doesn't rust together. I prefer to keep them well greased, but I digress. Maybe these people are just pulling them apart and being forgetful where they put the other half?

I was at an auction where they took the PTO shafts apart. I think so that nobody would walk off with them or the whole implement.

I recently bought a used rotary cutter from a dealer. They pulled the tractor end PTO half from all the powered implements to prevent theft. They do give the buyer both sections when the implement is purchased.
