Brush mowers - flail mowers and stones.....

Good morning gentlemen,

Reading a nice number of threads on TBN I have noticed in US rotating brush mowers are very popular.
Many videos on Youtube show how they work well and get the job done.

Around here the more you take stones out of your land, the more wild boars undig new ones leading to the necessity of using a flail mower which is, in my opinion, much more resistant.

So my question is :
Don't you have stones in US ?

Yes, lots of them. And frost action does seem to bring them to the top. But in our area at least we don't have animals that actually raise them above the surface of the ground, so generally they are not an issue in mowing. It may help that in our case at least, when I mow with a brush mower I have it set 3 or 4 inches above the ground so it only gets to ground level on bumps.

Here in the U.S. most of the flails' I see are D.O.T. crews mowing along highways. They use flails' along highway and residential areas to avoid liability issues with rotary cutters throwing stones. If you don't have to worry about shooting stones at houses, cars and kids, a rotary brush cutter will do just fine.

Yes Terry and Unbiden. I understand why setting the brush mower a few inches above the ground may solve the stone problem. I think the main drawback of "folding blades" brush cutters is that they are easily damaged by stones in the case they hit one of course. For heavy work we have here "chain" brush mowers. For sure you know that kind in US.

I like flail mowers because if a hammer flail is broken you may replace it in five minutes at a reasonable cost. A full blade for brush cutter may be very pricy.

A good heavy rotary cutter is good at turning big rocks into little rocks. I talk to a guy at the highway department that said they really do three different jobs. They use them to ditch grade and mow all at the same time.

hanging in front and the back of the mower to reduce the velocity of any
object it will hit and eject?


Which builders flail mower do you own?
I own a motorised 48 inch Mathews Lawn Genie and it so easy to use for both rough
and finished mowing.

Phil do you know how well the tuna harvest has been this past year in
the Mediteranean Sea? I have been following the worl wide tuna fisheries for
many years as alayperson as well as the great white shark activity and its population
in the Mediteraenean sea.

I live in northern New York state,if I removed all the stones from my property....all I would have is a big hole in the ground.I have been bush-hogging it for nine year and only shearded two shear pins and they weren't on rocks.Quality units take a beating and keep on going.

That would do some serious wacking to thick ragweed stems
and desert brush no doubt.
