whats missing here ? PTO post hole auger Questions, lots of pics

As has been said, you need a complete new PTO shaft that is properly sized for PHD's. At TSC, they can show you the PTO shafts they use on their new PHD's, and you can decide if one like it will work on yours or not. With a new shaft, it will come with the plastic guard which should be mandatory on PHD's. If they don't have one that looks like it will work, then head to the nearest tractor dealer in your area, surely they can help you out. When you finally get a new shaft and get it going, just be aware that a PHD is one of the most dangerous implements you can use on a tractor, so don't let anyone NEAR it while it is being used.

TSC will have augers too, and it looks like you need a new auger to actually dig with, so check them out while you are there. Start out with grade 2 shear bolts. There are lot a threads on this forum on using PHD's, and how to store them, just do some searching and you should find a few that will help out. Also watch the Everything Attachment video on PHD's. I don't think you are going to be able to do anything with that U joint except get the assembly off of the input shaft of the gearbox. That U joint looks to be a pressed in one. Try to find the shear bolt or whatever is keeping the U joint connected to the input shaft of the gearbox and get it off so you can measure the input shaft.. Did you go to the Danuser web site I posted? It looks to me like you have a little over 1/2 of a post hole digger... No Driveline, and I didn't see any augers, perhaps you have them elsewhere. I am guessing but cannot see in the photo, that the U joint is shear pinned to the input shaft. The input shaft should be just round, and smooth, No splines.. You need a Driveline with 1 3/8 six spline on the tractor end and shear bolt on the other. Exactly what size for the round shear bolt end, I don't know you will have to measure.

no shear pin on the PTO shaft thing, but there was one for the auger side..........what you see in this U bolt pic is what I got, this thing looks really old, I went to the website and not many looked like this they were all a little different..


thanks for all the safety tips but I'd bet this thing has been used a million times without a safety guard on the shaft

I saw those 1 1/4 shafts that terminated with part of the U bolt, so I might be able to find the other half with the 6 spline on it and rig something

yes I have the auger, its in the shed, and it looks almost brand new ( with scrapes from use )

if anyone has any advice without the safety first you can PM me if you don't wanna type it out in the open forum....lol

I think you will find that the yoke is held on to the gear box with a nut in the center like the yoke on a truck differential. (see pict) You can not use a regular shaft like Tractor supply sells because the yoke is totally different. If you can fine the correct size of the other end of the shaft it would be very easy to make the connection to the tractor. Measure the opening in the end of the shaft carefully. It may not be square. Many are rectangular to keep the u-joints in phase.

This is either a late Danuser Model F7 or early model F8. The tractor half PTO is missing. Seeing how we have been in business for 103 years, some PTO suppliers were not lucky to stay in business. The PTO is an old Rockwell. Rockwell went out of business in the late 1980's.
The correct way to fix and covert this machine is with a PN 7577 Conversion Kit. Here is what comes with the kit:

Hold onto your hat when you go to buy this kit. The prices have shot up rapidly in the last ten years. Distributors and wholesalers won't sell to the end-public. By the time I found someone who would sell to me for my F8, the price was up near $600 for the driveline, pinion, guards and decals. It hasn't come in, yet, so I don't know how much shipping is going to get added onto that. AND sales tax. It might be closer to $700 before it's done.

Yikes. I haven't priced new post hole diggers lately. I need one for this spring. Who makes a decent digger for a semi-reasonable price?

A pto powered three point post hole digger is better than using a shovel. Then again if you use a loader bucket mounted hydraulic digger. You will sell the pto/three point hitch unit to somebody that doesn't know any better.
No shear pins to break. Ability to reverse out from obstruction. Ability to apply down pressure in hard soil.
We just had another report here or at the y t m a g . c o m site . Where the wife was applying down pressure on the three point auger while her husband ran the tractor. She had both arms torn off and she later died.

since I was the OP I wanted to update everyone, we couldn't find the correct bar and spline adapter within our set budget of $ 100, what we ended up doing was buying a used auger on Craigslist for $ 450 and using it , then re-selling it on C/L for almost $ 400....win-win

someone should just rent implements....lol
