I just picked up a used 3pt post hole digger that shows almost no wear. The auger does not have the small cutting teeth on the lead edge. Does anyone use an auger without the teeth? Even in average rocky soil I would imagine that they are needed.

Are you talking about these teeth?

Yes, the two black parts held on with two inch long bolts.

The auger teeth are hardened more so than the auger itself. The auger won't last long without teeth on it.

Tractor Supply sells both the cutting edges and the screw points.

I would certainly consider them as 'wear items' as they are doing the bulk of the work and will certainly have to be replaced over time.
