Kubota's webpage lists the smallest BH77 backhoe bucket size as 10". Are smaller sizes available (8" or 6"), or are their ways to dig a narrower trench than 10"?

I bought my B26 used and the original owner had bought a 12" and and 18" bucket. He cut the 18" down to a 7" which is just right for trenching. It is the QA bucket and that is just a tad wider than the attachment points. SO yes you can cut down a larger bucket to make a trenching bucket if you want too. I have no idea how much it cost him to cut and reweld the side panels.

If you have a lot of clay in your soil, a smaller bucket is sometimes hard to empty. I have a lot of clay, so I use an 18" bucket.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have a 16" bucket, but may eventually buy the 10" if that's the smallest available. No clay on my land, so that's not an issue for me.

Very true as my 7" and even my 12" is hard to remove wet material from it. The 7" works great for trenching in dry conditions though. You either have to work it in really wet (it dumps OK then) or really dry because when in a plastic state, clay really holds tight.

As Gary said, you can only go as narrow as the attaching pins. I just had a spare 16" narrowed to 10", the shop quoted me $150 but only charged $110 at the end. Although I would have liked narrower, I have a thumb which is 9" so that limited me. If you have a lot of clay or wet soil and trenching to do you can cut some (most) of the sides out of the bucket which will remove most of the suction. Just don't use the same bucket for heavy, rough digging as much of the strength is lost also.

Search for 'Clay bucket' Google images will get you some ideas.

Look and see what sized buckets were available for a B21- the BH77 and the backhoe on the B21 use the same buckets, as do the BH65 and one or two other Kubota backhoes I believe.

You can figure out if there's a narrower bucket available by checking thru the Kubota online parts manual.
