Rotary Cutter Which new cutter???

Is your deck setup so that the rear is 3/4" higher in the rear than the front. This requires less power. If the rear is lower than the front of the deck it takes more power to cut but should result in better cut quality. Do you have any pictures of the area of concern with what you believe is the problem curious to see what your talking about?

Yeah, we played around with the tail wheel adjustment a good bit. It was too high in the rear to begin with so we lowered it one hole and then two which helped cut quality a lot. Post a pic shortly...

I have had good luck after 5+ years of use with my Woods BB60X on my slightly larger L3830. I am not sure how this compares to the others you have looked at, and I am not sure how much 2" diameter stuff I have tried but it take out some good sized Autumn Olive without any problems - probably well over 2" at the base. It's really easy to get the blades on and off for sharpening and it has been very durable so far. I don't have much experience with other single spindle cutters other than some ancient Bush Hog units.

I value your opinion greatly on these boards. Your experiences match my findings quite often and I have found you to be quite the gentleman in both your approach and explanations. Let me alter my previous post while at the same time standing by my meaning.
The only LandPride brush cutter I have ever run was within the last week. It was a brand new 2072 6' medium duty cutter. I like the way it is built and it did cut well. However, the rear of this cutter seems to be more "covered" than the other round back cutters I have seen. It had an additional black shield on the rear that I assumed was adjustable to release the cut grass/brush. I was wrong. It is not adjustable and my friend totally removed it trying to gain a "relief opening" for the grass to discharge through. This is we're I was not impressed with the LandPride unit. Not sure if this is technically right, but it appears to me that the design is to create a type of vacuum to keep the clippings inside of the cutter and mulch them up. That in itself is ok but where we use a cutter it is usually tall and needs to be discharged away from the cutter instead of recirculating inside the cutter. My theory is that This caused the tractor to bog down and actually ran the temp gauge up causing the operator to have to shut down the tractor to an idle while the tractor cooled off. My friend disliked this so much he brought the cutter to our vo-tech Ag shop and had the back cut out opening up a relief for the grass to be discharged. I/we are hoping this will make it quit bogging and run cooler. The cutter itself is great. I like the design a lot, the clevis hitch is strong and the gearbox is bombproof. It just needs some help discharging the grass.

That lead up to the newest post from me. If the woods has a way to discharge out the rear, that's probay the way I'm going to go. No disrespect at all to LandPride just not what I was expecting

I have found the rubber guards to be problematic and now use chains with no clogging and I cut some bad stuff. We usually have both tractors going and the L5740 with LP cuts the same stuff as the M8540 and Woods. I'm not doubting your experience, just curious.

As mentioned, I like Woods as well as Land Pride and of course Bush Hog and Rhino make good cutters, I just don't have any recent experience.

I looked at the Woods you are considering as well as the next one down and like them, I am pretty sure blades are easier to change on the Woods too, so like I said, any of those you are considering will serve you well and keep us posted with pictures.

In my first photo of the new2060, you can see the black guard totally covers the rear outlet. We thought if you removed it we may be able to get some clippings discharged better.

Photo two shows how we are cutting the rear out. Removing the black cover helped non that we could tell.

Photo three shows how we cut the rear down. Next week it gets reinforced and painted then we will see if any of this helps.

I guess all my posts are for one answer: do any of these other new cutters have the back totally blocked off like the LandPride? The Ag teacher told me he had to cut the back out of a John deere mx6 for it to cut as well.

The photo you have of the lift type cutter that shows the rear with chains... It appears to have more of an opening than the ones I posted. Can u tell if it has a wider opening at the rear?

I had a BB720. Beast of a mower. I used it to clear some very rough land and cut trails through my woods. I cut many logs and trees larger than 4". I was hard on it and it held up pretty well. I did finally break the stump jumper, but again, I was doing stuff with it that I shouldn't have.

I now have a Bush Hog 297. This is an excellent mower also. Really, the same quality or slightly higher in my opinion. There are little design aspects that show through. Woods has updated their newer models to match some of these features. The biggest one is the three point hook up. Older Woods had a single ear that was easy to bend. The newer models and the Bush Hog have the two piece ear that supports the pin on both sides of the three point lift arm. Since I did all the hard work with the Woods, this mower has a much easier life.

I would buy either again and probably make my decision based on price.

I think the backs are made that way for safety reasons. It does present a problem in thick mowing conditions. It you cut the back out, just be careful if you later use it around people, structures, livestock or near roads.,
