Hi everyone it's been some time since I have been online and here in the site. I have a question about a 3pt. dethatcher by CMP. The gentleman seems very nice and he stated that I would need his 50" model to stay just inside my wheel track width so I wouldn't catch the unit on anything while in use. His unit weighs 45-48 pounds which he states is about the perfect weight along with the weight of the tractor 3pt. arms and top link. Unit is made well and he says it works great. Has anyone used this unit? If so what are your thoughts? I downloaded the plans from madreferee way back befor he passed. His unit looks as if would be much heavier then the CMP. Gentleman stated that you don't want to heavy because then you tear up your grass instead of the thatch. Ok folks whats the verdict? Thanks Mark

Wow hard room to play! I was hoping for some feed back on whether to make a dethatcher or purchase the CMP unit. I know others have made the unit Madreferee had designed and would like to know how it works? If anyone can help I would be thankful, I saw on Everything Attachments that their pine straw rake was being used for dethatching also what about that ? Thanks Mark

Not familiar with CMP but almost all dethacthers that I have seen have the option of adding weight to them.My son has a box store pull type and he has to add a minimum of two cinder blocks (approx 80 lbs) to get his to work properly. His is a 42". On a 3pt hitch version you have the top link adjustment which would allow adjusting the tooth attack angle. This would potentially reduce the amount of weight required.

Your right and I wasn't thinking about top link adjustment at all, good stuff. I was wondering about just the weight factor. The CMP isn't made a heavy as the plans found on this site but like I stated the man from CMP said it doesn't have to be heavy to do it's job? Well thats why I wanted to know from folks here that use a dethatcher. I hope I'm making some sort of sense. Thanks for the response. Mark

Here's a previous discussion that might be of some help. I bought a CMP last spring and used it to dethatch the lawn. (about 2/4 acre) I thought it did a fairly good job but I found that adding down pressure did an even better job. This was using my Allis 720 which has down pressure on the 3PT with a double acting cylinder. My 60" unit is light enough to pick up and move easily by hand.
Using a conventional 3PT might require adding a little weight to the rake.

I have a box store 42'' model (I want to get rid of and make a 3PH dethatcher). I add 2 cinder blocks to it and it does a good job. I don't think it really hurts the turf, if it does it is very minimal and grows right back. It really pulls the thatch up.

If the CMP dethatcher was QH compatible and you had a QH that would add another 60+ pounds to it.
