Can you describe how hard it is to start and how it acts?

It's probably the fuel pump, that is kind of a weak link on them. I have the same machine and mine has an electric replacement pump, let it run for 20 seconds or so and it starts right up. In fact I started it yesterday for the first time in over a month, no problem. They do need a 2 psi regulator on them if you are replacing it; if you are just using it as a boost pump for starting it should be fine as is as an inline addition on a momentary switch.
