    Default Gooseneck Trailer Ball height

I have an IH4700 Single axle with a diesel engine (GVW 25,999). Is it possible to pull a gooseneck trailer with this or is it too high? If somebody did it how did you do it?

You didn't mention what bed you have, if any.

Some trailers have an adjustable height coupler. It that is still not enough, you can recess the ball.

I agree that most goosenecks have an adjustable column that you can use to level the trailer. Depending on your local laws and how strictly they are enforced pulling a trailer may require a CDL since the gross combined weight rating will be over 26000 lbs. My state doesn't get to involved with smaller trucks seems to vary state to state.

I have a 14' flatbed on it now but it is in rough shape and probably needs replaced. The cab needs some work as well but other than that the truck is in great condition,i.e. virtually new tires, brakes, springs, fuel system, etc. It runs great - just needs to refine some creature comforts, paint, and the bed has been abused.

Interesting photo of gooseneck hitch on semi tractor. My concern is getting the trailer hitch to reach through the bed.

You see them all the time pulling big gooseneck living quarters horse trailers. Most use the IH 4700 LP (low profile) chassis. Like was mentioned the trailer coupler adjusts.

If it's a full height chassis with a deck on it you will either need a custom nose on the trailer, or live with a nose high trailer, or recess the receiver in the deck

That is the normal tire size. Specs show your top of frame rail height at 37.8", 34.8 for the 4700 LP. A GMC 2500 HD 2WD has a cargo floor height of 38.6". Mine are 4WD and sit up a little higher. A bed should not add more than 4"-6" inches to the ball mount height and that would be without a recessed mount. Both of my GN trailers have at least 18" of adjustment up. Any bed manufacturer should be able to give you the exact height of their ball mount on your chassis. If you have air ride you could add a dump valve for hooking up which is a common feature. I don't see you having any problems.

Don't forget to post pictures after. Remember the TBN rules, no pictures, it didn't happen.

Thanks! i will have to take some measurements and see what I can come up with. I know the bed adds more 6" - I am sure over 12" but I will take some measurements.

Usually the cross members sit on the chassis frame rails so you have 3"-4" of height plus the steel or aluminum plate, another 1/2" or so. The bed frame rails are bigger but run along side the chassis frame rails. Here is a CM with 3" cross members and a trough between the frame rails so you can get an idea of how low you can get. This one looks lower than my pickups.
