... a 700lb implement strapped to a 4x6 pallet. Implement would sit approx 36" high. Shipped from Suffolk, Va (maybe ZIP 23321 ?) to 48003. My 11mpg truck would cost me around $450 and 24hrs of drive time. FreightCenter just quoted me $480-550, depending on how they classify residential vs business (they may or may not consider a farm address as a business).

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

With fuel, insurance, depreciation, meals and one night in a hotel, plus missed work time, I think Freight Center $500 is way cheaper.

Other consumer oriented LTL (less-than-truckload) shippers are Fed-Ex's Overnight and Yellow Freight.

Yea it will cost a lot to go and get it but just think you will be out of the house, doing something different and meaningful. I myself go a lot of places just like this to pickup something that could be shipped for around the same amount but I take the boy and a vacation day and we get to spend time together. Yea that's just me sometimes I'm not wrapped to tight!

The guy might actually meet me half way, total drive time (round trip) would be around 13 hours and about $250 in gas ... if the family wants to tag along, it might be a nice time. I agree with you Guesseral, I like road trips like this. I buy alot of my stuff "abroad" if the deal is right. We will see ... tho I'm still open to cheaper shipping options too.

Yea I just drove from Erie Pa to 35 miles short of Cincinnati 2 weeks ago to pick up my new Gatormade equipment trail to haul my tractor on. I just couldn't buy one at home for the price and hay I took the boy, we both took a vacation day and spent some time together.

If you decide on this option, do you have the resources available to unload the cargo from the Freight truck to your truck?

We get shipments all the time, for commercial addresses we were told we need either a fork lift or loading dock. I have a forklift on the back of a tractor and they have never given me any hassle. If it takes more than 30 minutes to unload there is an up charge. I think the trucking outfit we use is New Penn, but I might have that wrong, I'm just the dummie on the tractor driving around in circles.

Actually I think what we'll do is back the trucks up to either, and "slide" the piece from one bed to the other, on a sheet of plywood. I'll use my ratchet tie downs if needed

also call companies around you like yellow freight, etc. Thats what i did to ship a pallet from idaho to Iowa. They just had it sit in their facility till space opened up. it saved me alot of $$$ over general freight quote.

i think drive, take the wife, girl friend, significant other, stay at a b and b and earn some brownie points, make a weekend out of it.

OR

use it as a man's trip to get away from the wife, girl friend, significant other.
