HP per foot of field cultivator?
Looking at buying something like this. John Deere - 1100 9' Field Cultivator - Cultivators - Acreage Equipment - Catalog - Ludens Inc.
Have not used any tillage equipment in about ten years and I have forgot the rules of thumb. I know I pulled a 7' cultivator with a 4WD 47 hp tractor. Wondering if my current 95 HP 2WD tractor could handle a 15' cultivator?
I know if you take the sweeps off and try to run the chisels deep it takes a ton of HP but I don't really remember the plow having a lot of drag with the sweeps on but it has been a long time.1980 John Deere 4440

According to http://archive.lib.msu.edu/DMC/Ag.%2.../PDF/e1152.pdf, 3.5 HP (drawbar) per foot.

Re: HP per foot of field cultivator?
So much depends on the weight of the tractor and soil conditions. We pulled an 18 1/2 foot fully mounted with 85 HP white and our 5000 Ford that was after market turboed. Neighbor pulled 15 1/2 foot pull type with 4240 JD in similar soil conditions. Typically running depth around 6" on plowed ground. All of them 2WD with duals.

Re: HP per foot of field cultivator?
I don't cover a lot of acres agriculturally. But I have a pulltype 15' that I use on my M9540. It handles it easily, especially at normal tillage depth. I think a 3pt style would be even easier to handle because of the traction you could gain. My pull type is dead weight and does nothing to add traction.

Re: HP per foot of field cultivator?
Thanks for the replies. My tractor is heavy. It has a cab, a loader, and the rear tires are loaded. I can't remember the exact weight as it was several years ago when I filled them up but if I recall it was around 800 lbs of liquid per tire that was added.
