Default I want to buy a flail mower what brand ?

I would like to buy a flail mower in the future. 5 foot or 6 foot ish. I have read the other post on this topic. Several pages worth. I think I can get a 5 foot for 2000$? Beats buying a finishing mower and not being able to mow thicker grass. This is both. A few things here -

    *what brands
    *where can I buy
*does it take similar power to run a 5 foot flail mower or less than a 5 foot brushhog? My 25 horse diesel does very well on a 5 foot brush hog com paired to our gas 30 to 35 horse tractors.

My flail mower will be for light lawn and some times paths with light saplings. I see they make flail for heavy brush and lawn
I figured it is not much more for a flail vs a finish. Just as well I thought new was a better option. Used would probably need new knifes all around and etc

I would never buy something like that new. So many around at rock bottom prices that have a lot of life left in them. I like the Ford/NH 917. Robust, simple, good parts availablilty and they work good.

I ran a six foot 917 with a 42 PTO HP Diesel tractor with power to spare.

Until you have an exact idea of how much money you want to spend.

A five foot brush hog or rotary finish mower only presents half of it
cutting edge at any time to the work

A flail mower presents many many more inches fo cuttting edge to the work at all times.

You can purchase flailmowers with heat treated/hardened side slicer knives as standard equipment.

The nice thing about the flailmower is you will be able to use it on any of your mules with no issues
other than preventing PTO shaft damage.

Parts are available so thats not an issue for most all flail mowers.

There are a lot of good used flailmowers available in www.tractorhouse.com
the year round so that is an option

Decide how much money you can afford to spend before you proceed as that wil be your guide.

A lot of dealers have new inventory they want to sell on tractor house too.

Wow ! Didn't know that used would be a great option!

I have a worn out finishing mower that I have to weld up. The pulleys are falling Through the deck and it throws belts really badly. Still cuts very nice!! Its a 5 foot deck with long rollers. I will be repairing it and see if I can easily get a few more years out of it....

I was thinking of getting a brush hog, and I was thinking about getting a finishing mower as well. Found out about flails and I though I might have this old finish mower for good cuts across my lawn but I could use my flail for BOTH! Though that 3pt finishing mowers and brushhogs cost a similar amount of money so why not have an old finishing mower and a flail for both brush and near the house.

Trust me I love brushhogs as between my dad and I we have two, but for around the house I figured a flail could cut near the mail box and through the ditch, along the drove way and fence line and of course along the woods.
I don't like pushing my finishing mower through thick grass. Its hard on them

Hey Leonz, could you go into deeper explaination of what you mean by this statement? I'm trying to follow what you mean but got lost.

I have lots of reasons I love flail mowers for the durability/ clean cut but they are safer as well as they don't "throw" objects at your house etc. I have read flails don't hit items and shoot them out.

    Thanks guys

Mind you I am in Canada. Back in the 90s I bought a nice six foot Ford 917 for $1000.00 from a dealer. Brought it home in the back of my company 4 cyl Aerostar van!

A few years back I bought a six foot 917 Fine cut in really nice shape at auction for less then $500.00. I could have bought a few at that price, Fords and Alamos.

I can run an old 6 ft flail with similar hp, but not in thick or high stuff. The flail takes more power than a rotary, at least for a fine cut machine with more knives.

Perfect! So I'm sure I would do well with a 5 foot flail mower.
