Anyone ever use a boom pole on your 3 point hitch? I'm thinking of buying one from Northern Tool & Equipment that lists one in their 2003 Fall/Winter Master Catalog on page 74. But I can't figure out if it will do what I want to do within the limits of the 3 point hitch lifting capacity. The manual for my B2710 says that the 3 point hitch has a max lift force of 1655 lbs. at the ends of the hitch arms and a lift force of 1300 lbs. 24 inches from the ends of the lift arms. The boom pole is 106 inches long. So how much will the 3 point hitch lift at 106 inches from the end of the hitch arms? The boom weighs 111 lbs. I want to lift no more than 200-250 lbs. Does anyone have any experience with this type of implement?

Looks like the lift is reduced about 150# per foot. 1655# out to almost 9 feet should yield about 300#. That's not bad for such a long boom.

If you're lifting 200-250 lbs, you'll be okay with it. I lifted a lot more with a 20HP Yanmar.

Since getting a tractor w/ a FEL, mine has seen limited use. For a while I've been tempted to make a short boom pole that would kinda "kwik-attach" to the loader. The same concerns you have about being farther away from the weight and muscle of the tractor would apply to such an attachment too.

If you do a search on "Boom Pole" you can wade through it and see if there's anything there that may help you...............chim

Kind of a dumb question here, but what do people mainly use a boom pole for? I understand what it is, but having never seen one at use, I'm kind of curious as to the most common uses.

Hoisting and carrying heavy objects. Unloading heavy stuff from trucks or trailers. Great, inexpensive tool for those who do not have a FEL.

I use my FEL, with or without a chain, for all hoisting and carrying. FEL's are very versatile, and right up front so there's no stiff neck the next day.

Bill,

You will be just fine doing what you are planning. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As already stated, boompoles are mainly used by people without fel's.

My brother fabricated one for my fel. Nice setup as it attaches to my quick attach plate. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have had excellent results using a boom pole to skid logs. I know the safety police might frown upon this, but if I lengthen the top link, the end of my boom pole is very close to the ground lowering the center of gravity to acceptable levels. Also, I put a load in my FEL for balance. When the skidded log comes close to an obstacle that might hang it up and threaten to flip tractor, stop, lift boom and the log magically rises over obstacle and comes in closer to tractor. Lower boom and you now have slack in chain so that tractor can resume forward motion without a load to challeng traction. Last weekend I Pulled large trees through tight rocky forest this way that could not have been done from the draw bar position. From the draw bar you simlpy do not have the flexability to position the log to keep from getting it hung up on stumps and large rocks in the path like you do with boom pole. You do not want to do this with any tractor speed or maintain pulling with the boom pole in the raised popsition, it is simply not safe. But again, the ability to lift log over obstacles and to restart forward motion without a load gives much effectiveness to this task.

I have a B2710 and use a boom pole periodically to unload stuff from my trailer. I do not have a FEL but the boom pole works well when unloading or moving heavy attachments. I had no trouble unloading a bush hog and a tiller with mine and the tiller weighed around 500 lbs. I hitched the load to the mid point of the boom pole to reduce the moment arm of the load and it handled it but the front end got a little light. I bought my boom pole from Leinbachs.
