Chipper BX22 and Woods Chipper

Picked up my new Woods chipper today and spent the afternoon using it, no pictures yet. This thing can really chew up the wood. Using it mainly to clear up a lot of brush on my lot so probably not working it very hard yet. I decided to go with a unit with a 5 inch capability knowing that I'll prbably never use it. Mostly poplar, some oak, only had one time where I tried to let it self feed a 4 inch piece of oack about 10 foot long and the unit bogged down badly.

Runing the BX at about 2900 rpm, only concern so far is that when I engage the pto, almost stalls the tractor. I tried to start like I would a brush hog with lower rpms but stalled the tractor one time. Went ahead and upped the rpm, then engaged the pto and although it bogged down, it was soon up to speed.

I was clearing a path and left the pto engaged as I moved 20 feet or so to get closer to the brush piles since I didn't like how it affected the engine when starting and stopping the shaft.

Does it surprise anyone that getting the 125 pound flywheel turning bogs down this tractor? Any cocern with moving with the pto engaged? I'm going to to try and adjust the legs a bit when the chipper is on the ground to see if I can get the pto shaft to run a bit straighter, I used it as it came from the dealer and wonder if that might make the start a little smoother.

Only downside so far is that you have to keep clearing the chip pile from the discharge area but so far, very satisfied!

There are a lot of implements that use the pto while moving, so that wouldn't be an issue. Starting my old 6' rotary mower was a bit tough, but I could do it without engagine the wheels, so it worked out all right. Straighter on the shaft would be better on the yoke and universal joint, but wouldn't make a whole lot of difference on start up.

You should definitly check the pto shaft for proper length and angle. I recommend that to everyone on there first hook up. To start your machine I would figure on having to have the rpm up. You have a hydraulic wet clutch on that tractor like the big compact tractors not an electric garden tractor variety don't worry. If the unit is within the horsepower range you shouldn't have to worry.

I have basically the same chipper and the concern I would have about moving it while running is that you have to lift it which puts quite an angle on the shaft and universal joints. I always slow mine down almost to a stop and disengage it before I lift it to move. Be sure to adjust the legs so your shaft is as close horizontal as possible when in the down position. This will reduce the wear and tear on the shaft and it will run much smoother.
