Quick tach bracket w/ JD 59\" snowblower on JD 4310

Last night I got around to attaching the Quick tach bracket
for my JD 59" front mount snowblower on my JD 4310.
I had originally used the snowblower on my JD 790.
Anyway, the bracket came with 6 shoulder bolts and is
supposed to be mounted in the same 6 holes in the frame
where the brush guard for the FEL mounts. I wanted
to keep the brush guard and the snowblower bracket on
at the same time. As it turns out, the shoulder bolts are too
big to fit through the brush guard bracket so I just used
the same bolts that mount the brush guard bracket.
Does anyone think that I should have drilled out the brush
guard bracket holes to make them any bigger or am I okay
just using the non-shoulder bolts.
I guess I am a little wary because in wet heavy snow 2 years
ago, the PTO twisted the PTO coupling out of the bracket and
we had to weld it all back together. The quick tach bracket
for the 4310 appears to be much more rigorously designed
than the one for the 790.

Re: Quick tach bracket w/ JD 59\" snowblower on JD 4310

I don't know whether or not JD used "shoulder" bolts for a specific reason, but I'd guess as long as the "regular" bolts are of similar size and strength, you should be OK.

Can you post a picture of the new bracket?

Although we usually have the light, fluffy type of snow (champagne powder - good for skiing, lousy for snowballs), you've got me concerned about the durability of the 790 Mid PTO mount . Thanks.

Re: Quick tach bracket w/ JD 59\" snowblower on JD

From the way i read your post, the brush guard bolts are a smaller diameter than the quick attach bolts. I would have drilled out the mount for the larger bolts. A small diameter change makes for a large difference in shear strength. Also having a bolt clamping tow pieces of metal together where the diameter is correct in one piece and th eother hole is larger sets yo up for the type of motion that causes bolts to shear. I think the fact that JD used shoulder bolts indicates that they dont' want the bolts to move and will be subject to a fair amount if shear.
Just my opinion of what I would do if i was designing it.

Andy,
Thanks, That's the kind of opinion I was looking for.
The shoulder bolts were M12 X 45. The brush guard bracket
bolts are M12 but they aren't shoulder bolts. The shoulder
is just big enough so that it doesn't fit through the holes
of the brush guard bracket. I think that I will take it apart
and use some to enlargen the holes on the brush guard.
Cheers,

Mountain_Man,
I'll take a picture of the new 4310 bracket when I get home tonight. My 790 bracket looks identical to yours. Here are pictures of what it looked like after it broke and what the repair in progress looked like.
Cheers
Perry

Re: Quick tach bracket w/ JD 59\" snowblower on JD

I appreciate the info and pix. I'll certainly keep an eye on it, and seriously consider 'beefing it up" beforehand as well. Musta made quite a noise when it let go... Anything else get broken?

Re: Quick tach bracket w/ JD 59\" snowblower on JD

It didn't really make much noise. For a second I thought
that I had sheared a pin or got a rock stuck the blower.
Nothing else broke. Here's the first of three pictures of
the new bracket for the 4310. This bracket has a cube
like cage that holds both ends of the pto coupling unlike
the 790 bracket.

And here's picture three of three. I guess three strikes
and I'm out.
