I was told by Paul Short to ask my question on this Web. site, he runs the Specialty Repairs in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. and I must say that he has made me smile with the talent that he has, in how he customizes his Kubota or just anything.
I was wondering if a 976 lb. rototiller would be to much work for the Kubota L4760 three point system? What I mean by that is the work on the lifting and letting it down.
I am looking at the Maschio U180. I have a Case IH 5240 Maxxum at least 100HP that I use with a Northwest 8 tiller and it cut through the ground with ease and then I have a 5 that I use on the back of a 25Hp New Holland and that it jerks and rattles terribly because it is so light weight.
I figure if I am going to buy a new tiller I want a well made and heavy tiller so I can enjoy the time I till the ground. It must be gear driven not chain. I looked at and wanted a Sicma but it was so difficult to find the T20 72 with C tines.
The L4760 has a lift at the 3pt. in the 24 range at 2760 Lb.

Your tractor should have no issues handling that weight tiller if you have some weight out front for ballast. Loader or suitcase weights.

I just got a KingKutter 60" tiller, 600lbs or so. It worked pretty well behind my 32hp 3800lbs of L3200. Glad I have a HST & could baby it on hard or muddy ground, but it did a good job. I wouldn't want to try a 72" on mine, but you are a class up from what I'm running & I would expect having no problems.

I don't find a tiller to be a heavy HP consumer especially if you go slow and let it work the soil in small bites. HP wise I don't think it makes much difference in speed but most will start bouncing in hard soil if you go too fast. IIRC my King Kutter II 6 foot model weighs 850# and works fine but it will still bounce around if I hit a hard spot of a bunch of rocks which is what I would expect it to do. You don't want a tiller so heavy that it shears off the tines when it hits an UG object rather than just raising up a bit to go over it.

I was definitely HP limited on my L3200 this weekend. No bouncing issues at all until I found some rocks or concrete debris in-front of my shop. Some of the ground was pretty hard as well. I was getting a good till & would have gone faster if I could, but I was already pushing the engine as much as I could without lugging it.

bilrus, Fallon and Gary and to each one who responds to my thread it is appreciated how each is willing to take the time to answer. It is amazing to me that people would be giving enough to try to help someone. I am Thankful to Paul a dear Friend of mine at "Specialty Repairs" in Bay Roberts for telling me to ask my question on Tractorbynet.com to be honest I had gotten on to this site a signed up before but then I thought I had to pay for the service so I quickly got off.
I realize now that I can not use the quote symbols when using the word inch.
Thank You Tractorbynet for this great and free service!

I run a 900 lb Maschio on the back of an MX5100 and an L4300 and consider it to be an ideal combination. Either tractor handles it with ease. You should have zero problems.

How people screw up tillers is to have more horsepower than the tiller can handle. Things break with too much HP.

No problem.

  1. Browse around TBN & get a feel for the place
  2. Use the TBN site Google search (not the one built into the forum, it sucks) to research specific issues
  3. Get some good knowledge on things that interest or are relevant to you & use it
  4. Give back when you can

I'm mostly done with step 1, but cycle through the others frequently depending on what I'm trying to do.

Less maintenance plus Tillers with Gear Drive are generally stronger or heavier built if not gear drive they will go belt and then again it is back to less maintenance or easier to repair.
