flail vs finish mower

trktrman,

I actually called BEFCO prior to posting just to confirm that their products were US made. They told me that everything they sell in made in house and that they do have a commercial relationship with an Italian branch, but they make their stuff locally. It probably is an Italian/European design as all of the fasteners are metric. I believe the PTO shaft is imported, but other than that item they stated everything was made in the US. Either way, it is not a Chinese import as had been previously suspected.

I was obviously misremembering the name of the Chinese made flails sold via eBay. I recall it sounded something like Befco but obviously that is not the name. Sorry for causing confusion. Mea culpa.

I just did a search on eBay. Betstco is the name of the seller I was referring to. Looks like it might be the same operation that sells Value Line.

I have been contemplating this as well. I have a land pride rear discharge finish mower and despite all the good things I read about them my mower misses grass between two of the blades on a regular basis. I have put new blades on and tried going slower it doesn't seem to affect it much. I have to cut my grass twice almost every time if I want it to look nice. Whats the deal? I am thinking about getting a flail mower because of this. Any ideas on why my current mower has such poor performance?

Hello Gareth,

With regard to your mowers issues it could be a
couple of things.

1. the blades are on upside down
2. the end edges of the blades are dull.
3. (If belt driven) the belt is stretched affecting the tension on the pulleys

(been there done that in all three instances with two blade rear discharge wheel horse Commando 8 lawn mower

If you decide to change to a flail mower the Landpride flailmowers are an
Italian made brand of high quality and your land pride dealer will probably
give you more for your trade.

The flail mower was a good idea but every one I can find that seems suitable is $4k+ even used, not that there's many used one's that I can find....

Check out Caroni through AgriSupply. Their 75" model is "rough cut" but you could special order the finish cut version which is identical except for the rotor and blades. About $1900 plus motor freight.

I saw those but was turned off by the rough cut description. Had no idea they could be ordered in finish cut.

Or you could order the Befco from SmallTrac. It's less than $3,000 for the 6' model. And you can order it with whichever blades you want.

Thanks I could not find a dealer for the befco anywhere even remotely considered local.

Youse need to be persistent to reach someone at AgriSupply that understands that they can special order the finish version which can be added to their next regular shipment from Caroni. Caroni makes the finish version of the 1900 (75" ) series as a standard model but AgriSupply for some reason chooses not to import that particular model. You may need to wait a few months depending on when their next container from Caroni is scheduled, but it can be done and others have done it.

All that said, if you have never seen the quality of cut of the "rough cut" you might be surprised at how good it is. Way better than a bush hog and pretty close to a rear finish mower. Perhaps not a manicured suburban lawn level but easily good enough for for any field or pasture.
