DR Mower/Trimmer for 3-pt hitch

DR Power 3-Point Hitch Trimmer Mower: Brush Cutter & Fence Line Mower

Comments, anyone? Personal and/or anecdotal observations would be most helpful.

We have 1 1/2 miles of road and ditch to mow, and "a lot" of wide trails and logging road where I want to manage the trail-side nettles and berries without using a lugable hand-held string trimmer.

DR makes good equipment. I've had one of their "brush mowers" for over 25 years, and it's still going strong, with very few problems. That puppy cuts down 2" saplings, and brambles run and hide when they hear it coming.

Their parts/support is very good, even when the product is older than a lot of the people who work there.

The self-propelled brush mower is great, but what about that light-weight boom mower?

I bought one used but in mint condition last year. I need to spend more time with it. I found my lowest wire in my fences is too low, so the head does not go underneath. The cutting head has a "ball" on the bottom that is too tall between the bottom of it and the "bumper disk" as I see it. I dread raising miles and miles of lower wire. So I am not sure what I will do.

Looking at the pictures in the sales page, I wonder if you couldn't get a spare string head (ball) and alter the top bushing shown to cut closer to the upper plate... Or fabricate a string holder, with a skid that replaces the ball with a shorter overall length.... It may not be as string change easy as the ball, but more compact...

Or can you mount a home made guard out in front of the disk to slide under the wire and guide it over the bumper disk ???

I have the DR high wheel, self propelled string trimmer --- I think that you'll get awfully tired of hopping on/off the tractor to change the line. Doesn't seem to last very long to me.

Yeah, I am thinking I will need mod it, probably next fall. Even thinking of taking off half the bumper and putting a hyd cylinder that I can extend and retract the arm with. I just put a new fence with a higher low wire, once grass grows in, I can try it out there. Previous guy must have been herding cats, the bottom wire is so low.

Have you tried different "string" types. My FIL bought some red line from somewhere and that stuff just will not bust....I think I could cut down a tree with it.
