I have a line on a Danuser F8. It looks a little rough but is said to be in great working order. I checked online and the gearbox is rated for a 40-80 HP tractor. Will I be able to run this on a Kubota L3540.

Also, When I get there, what are the suggestions for looking it over? Thank you.

The gearbox rating is the maximum capacity for the gearbox. Underpowering it means your tractor doesn't have the HP to break it.

Oh, and make sure it fits, some tractors can't quite lift the PHD high enough. My L3200 let's my Leinbach PHD drag its augur more than I'd like. I knew that when I bought it from a friend after borrowing it for months though.

Those are heavy duty. I'd look for any obvious cracks/breaks...don't expect you will find any, as I said, they are tough. I'd make sure it has oil/grease in the gear box. Mine leaks from the gear box fill port, also, around the shaft...I just add on rare occasions...works for me.

This is great. Would I be doing any damage to my tractor?

This also concerns me. I dont want to drag it, especially as I drive it on/off my trailer. Dos the auger itself connect and disconnect fairly easy?

Good things to look for.

The price listed for the unit is $475. This seems like a steel of a deal when considering new. However its not much less than a new Countyline although this brand is suppose to be pretty stout. Thoughts?

Should be a couple of bolts connecting the auger to the gearbox. It may have some sheet metal safety shields around that area (my Leinbach does) which you may or may not need to remove to get at the auger bolts.

My auger drags a bit from my B7610, but I would think that won't be a problem on an L3540.

Definitely do some practice holes before you try to put one right where you want it.

A new county line PHD is on sale for $420 right now at TSC, usually under $500. They don't come with an augur ($100-200 depending on size).

The augur itself is heavy but 1 man manageable. It connects to the gearbox with a pin or bolt & comes off relatively easy if it needs to for transport or what not.

My only concern with a beefy gearbox would be a beefy sheer pin. That sheer pin should break if the augur jams rather than a more expensive part (PHD gearbox or your tractor). You could always put in a smaller sheer pin into a bigger hole, but not the other way around.

Soooooooooo, here is the question. Buy or not buy... yes or no? This would be F8 with 12" auger.

A PHD has 4 parts, boom, PTO shaft, gearbox & augur. All cost around $200 each new & are commodity pieces that are readily available even if the OEM for your PHD is unknown or gone.

If the PTO shaft has been greased & the gearbox kept properly filled (about half way) with oil, they realistically won't wear out with non-commercial use. The only part that will wear is the digging teeth on the augur. Those cost about $20-40 and are wear items that should be expected to need replacing every so often. Any tractor implement will end up rusty & ugly shortly, so that doesn't matter much.

I regularly see PHDs go at auctions for over $500, which is pretty much the price of a new County Line one. So either the slightly beefier ones that are pretty ugly are worth equal to a new cheaper one from the farm store or people are stupid & blowing money at auctions. I find either explanation equally plausible.

I suspect that a cheap County Line PHD will be good for most occasional users.

I'd check to see if it fits or drags on somewhat level ground & go for it if you can get it for cheaper than a County Line one. Yes or no is a toss up.

Good point, I am about to head to work. If I get up early enough, I shall go get it tomorrow.

My thought is, since I do some tractor work for pizza money. I would charge $10 per post hole. at 50 holes its more than paid for. I will also be throwing in some posts around the house as well which sweetens the deal.
