I have a John Deere 4210. The width rear tires is 58 inches(outside to outside), the width of the front loader is 63 inches. I am going to buy a box scraper, should I get the 60 inch or the 65 inch box? What are the advantages / disadvantages of each?

Thanks for your help,

Dave in Sacramento

Get the 65 inch. That way it will cover outside of the left and right tire tracks, even if you are turning slightly.

Will there be any difference in performance taking into account that my tractor only has 28 hp?

Thanks,

Tractor_man,
I have a JD 4200 and the 65" Frontier box blade. The 28hp handles it, providing you are not trying to perform massive excavation in hard packed clay. Advantages of the 65" are you cover the tracks and have a couple inches on each side if you are trying to grade close to a fence or building. The only disadvantage I can think of is a few lbs of additional weight (22 additional on the standard box blade) which isn't material when you are talking about a 500 lb implement.

As Bill says, it's only a few pounds heavier so that won't make the difference. You'll take a 65" "bite" of earth instead of a 60" bite, so it will work your tractor about 8% harder. But that probably won't make a difference. If it does, you can make 13 passes instead of 12, and grab 60" of fresh earth and 5" of what you just leveled on the last pass. In other words it can't hurt you. But most of the time you'll probably be fine with the full width working.

That said, the advantages of working where your tire just went over is a compelling advantage. I think that's why they make the 65" model, since so may compact tractors are about 60" wide.

I've attached a picture of my 65" box blade shortly after I lifted it off the truck that delivered it.

This is getting pretty interesting. Are there any others offering box blades out there? I have been thinking about getting one for my TC-40D as well. It's about the only implement that I have been borrowing from a neighbor when needed and that gets old real quick. Anyone offer a New Holland blue in the powder coat finish? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Check out the Corriher eBay Store. I have the BB48 model. Very well built. Wish I went with the next size up, though it might be a bit hard on the tractor.
