Hello I am a new member to the forum, but I have been using it as a resource for awhile. I finally had a question I couldn't find an answer for so I figured it was time to sign up. My question is about John Deere Bush hogs, I just purchased a 4' John Deere model 54 bush hog from an older gentlemen. It is in great shape and I can find parts easily for it online, however I can find nothing on the specs. My question is this considered a light duty or medium duty bush hog? It looks well built, but it would be nice to know what size saplings it can handle. I also was wondering when these were produced? If anyone has any information it would be appreciated. I plan to give it a try this weekend behind my little JD650. I spent the winter clearing blackberrys and vines, but it is all starting to grow back so the bush hog came just in time.

Thanks!

What is your performance threat level? You say saplings. To me that means 2" or less. Nothing described as a bushog should have any problem with that size. ... Now when you talk 3" trees and up is where you need to move up from the light duty bushogs and use 6+ HP/ft width to run them. A bushog capable of handling 10HP/ft will cut trees up to 8".
