I am looking at 3ph splitters for my NH TC18. Do all these splitters come with the built in valve? My tractor has factory-set-up aux hydraulic ports in the rear with a valve. The ports have quick-connect fittings on them. Can't I just run the splitter from that valve? I think that's what the aux hydraulic set up is for, a log splitter. Do you think this would work, or am I crazy?

The 3PH splitters will come with their own control lever. You need to attach a bungee cord to the tractors aux hydraulic valve lever to hold it open. Running the splitter using the tractor lever would be a real pain!!!

I've used a Northern 3 point splitter for over 10 years and it works fine, I attach it to the rear hydraulic quick connects like you speak of. My Ford 2120 has a detent on the hydraulic lever so I don't need a bungee. The controls for the splitter are on the splitter.

AndyMA,
Sounds like you like your splitter. I've only used one once, but I would like to start selling forewood on the side. How fast/slow does this your split? How many GPM is your tractor?
I'm looking at a few different brands including the split-fire which splits in both directions. Waiting for prices though, expecting split-fire to be high.

Split fire is high. I've seen a site with price. Not sure if it is theirs or a dealers. I usually run my tractor on high idle 1100- 1200 rpm. It is as fast as I want to go. It would be nice to rig up a device where you could rev the tractor motor from the spliter. Norse (Igland) or Farmi have such a device which is radio controlled (used for winching).

I used a Northern Tool 3pt splitter for a couple years until my buddy needed it back. I was split between getting a 3pt or a stand alone splitter. I ended up getting a stand alone unit for a couple of reasons. Speed, It was a little faster, cost per hour was cheaper, but mostly it was the portablity. After Isabel came hit VA and Southern MD Everyone was giving away wood. They would get tired of cutting trees and want the wood gone. I would show up and cut and split the trees on site. I also would do this for money and leave the split wood. I was getting about $30/hour. I have already paid for my equipment.

Just another thing to look at.

I concur with Steve, in that a 3pt splitter attachment ties up the tractor that can be used to off load split wood, bring in wood to be split (especially to raise and position large pieces), and do other chores while wood is being split. I'd rather work around a B/S 8 hp engine running the splitter rather than my 32 hp diesel in my CUT, especially when the stand alone rig splits wood faster. Just my 2 cents, but wouldn't even consider a 3pt wood splitter. Each to their own. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I set mine on 2 sawhorses near the wood and hook up with 8' hoses beside the splitter and chuck the wood right into the FEL. Moving it is easy with the bucket and chain. bcs

I used to set my splitter on the ground and hook it up with long hoses to the tractor hydraulics. That left the front bucket available. Of course now with 2 tractors that is no longer necessary, but quite ofter I still don't hook it up, just set it on a couple of logs or on the ground. The Northern 3pt splitter is a little slower than some of the standalone ones. It all depends on your tractors gpm.

I've got a split fire 4 way and love it. The bi-directional splitting makes up for the slow movement due to low GPM tractor hydraulics.

The points about stand alone splitters and being able to load directly into your loader is valid, but I didn't want another engine to maintain so I went for the 3PH model.
