I bought a one year old Woods Brushbull-60". The driveline has a locking ring you are suppose to slide forward /backward when taking on/off. The three steel balls inside will not let the shaft from mower go on past those three balls. I sprayed them with some liquid wrench and cleaned PTO shaft on tractor. The ring slides back and forth but does not seem to be freeing these balls up to allow them to depress in and let the shaft slide on. Any suggestions?

If the balls are frozen, my preferred juice is PB Blaster. Liquid Wrench may be just as fine, who knows. After dousing the mechanism with either, let it rest at least 12 hours and try again. If you're sure you have the splines correctly aligned and the balls remain frozen separate the shaft, align the splines, slide the retainer ring back and have someone "lightly" tap on the exposed end of the shaft with a wood block between the shaft end and the hammer. If that doesn't do it, you have another problem altogether.

Good luck.

Try having someone hold the ring back while you tap the balls with a brass punch to get them moving.

Try twisting the collar, the one that come with my woods heritage was that way . Hope this helps.

I have a BB720 and it can be a challenge at times to get that on. I initially had similar issues and fought with it as you have to pull back and slide forward, not a normal easy thing to do. Found that pulling the ring back but not quite enough creates what you describe. Make certain that you not only have the ring back but back all the way and that it is not just a little forward on one side. That can be a cause. Overall the first 20 times is a royal PITA then it seems to be ok. I think it loosens up a bit.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will spray it again this morning and let it sit while I split wood. Then try it again later today. If it does not go on in 20 min. Of effort today I'm not messing with it again. After 2.5 hours of messing with it yesterday and trying several different things I'm pretty tired of working on something I just bought. Would of been nice if they had one of their employees make sure it worked before they dropped it at my house. Imagine that.

I had a problem getting mine on the other day for the first time. I found two things that helped me: first, I had to manually line up the splines on the shaft with the grooves on the PTO, and then wiggle the shaft up and down to get the shaft to start onto the PTO, about an inch until the balls hit the end of the PTO (Sometimes a "persuader" in the space between the spider and the front splined piece helps get it started). Second, I was trying to push/pull the plastic piece on the shaft. When I finally pulled back on the metal ring at the very front of the shaft, it slipped into place. The plastic piece simply covers the spring, and does not release the balls. Fluid film helped too. Good luck!

Got it. Thanks for the replies guys. I sprayed the crap out of it early this morning and let it sit for about 5 hours I guess. When I tried it again the collar moved a little further, but still would not go on. It did go on further though. So I kept moving it and tapping on it with a hammer and then it skid further on. Repeat. Then it went on. So I took it off and on and off and on and......... LOL I kept working it on and off and sprayed it again and repeat! Now it is working nice. I did some mowing with it today. I need to get some more diesel fuel for my next day off. Lots of stuff to do between mowing and york raking.
