Ok, I've been wanting a backhoe for over a year, and I need to fish or cut bait. I need some help. I have about 200 small stumps to pull, creek clean up, and some trenching around the farm, as well as the need to dig a root cellar. Tell me the back hoe 485 would be a good investment and there's even more you could do with it or don't do it, save your money and hire some to do it! The cost is around $9k...
Thanks,
Matt

Unless you have a "very good friend" in the excavating business...I would think that hiring someone to dig out 200 stumps, clean up a creek, dig a root cellar and miscellaneous other trenching would quickly add up to quite a chunk of money paid out. And when they leave...their hoe/equipment goes with them.

The 485 is a nice size backhoe that should do you a real good job...and it will always be there for you when the "next" project pops up.
You'll find many uses for it, that you may not even be thinking of at this time.

The other advantage of having your own tool is this: no one you hire will do the work to satisfy you, as well as you could satisfy yourself.

All that being said....if it's within the budget, I'd certainly purchase the backhoe versus hiring it done.

If at some later date a few years down the road it's no longer needed...it should be no problem selling it if you keep it maintained.

Good luck with your decision

Mine doesn't get used that often but when it does I'm sure glad it's there. One thing you might want to consider for pulling stumps is a single ripper tooth you can put on in place of the bucket. Makes it easier to rip through roots and you don't have the issue of a lot of torque on the bucket when you try to hook a corner tooth on the stump. I have some clearing to do so I'm considering the ripper from Bro-Tek.

:welcome:emo3520,also if you are going to use a bucket, make sure it's narrow. But the single ripper tooth is for sure the best.
