Does anyone have a source for \"poly\" ?

I'm going to put a poly blade edge on the FEL.
I'm trying to locate hi-density "sheet" poly about 1" thick.
I've already seen the mfg. edges for big bucks..
'Thought I'd try to fab my own.
Thanks,

McMaster Carr has Nylon and Delrin flat strp that should work.

http://www.mcmaster.com/

Do a search for Nylon or Delrin Strips. They also have several other materials which may be suitable.

There is a place called Mouldagraph Corp in Charleston WV. They stock all kinds of plastics in different shapes and sizes.

One good candidate would be ultrahigh molecular weight polyethelene (UHMWPE) for its abrasion resistance. In some applications, like conveyer belt guides, its been known to outlast hardened steel. They also us it for one side of some artifical hip and knee joints. High density polyethelene (HDPE) would be a step down from (UHMWPE).

Whatever you pick, check out the COLD mechanical properties to avoid brittleness.

Re: Does anyone have a source for \"poly\" ?

As Jim M. said, McMaster Carr has several options in sheet goods. I have been thinking of getting a 3/4 to 1" thick 2'x4' piece of HDPE to bolt onto the bottom of my bucket so it doesn't scrape up my drive way. I was figuring that I would use 1' x 4' so I would have a spare for (hopefully) a few years down the road. I am thinking that I will use a dado blade to create a front lip to slide up against my bucket edge, then counter sink some holes in the HDPE for 1/4-20's and bolt through the bottom of the bucket.

Price is $86 for a 2'x4' or $51 for a 1'x4'. They have many other options as well.

Good luck, keep us posted if you do it and how it wears.

Thanks for the info.
As soon as McMaster was metioned, I went to "rootin" thru the office and found a catalog.
I think I'm going with the UHMW polyethylene in the rectangular bar.
I have a welded wear bar on the front of the bucket. It sticks down .5" from the bottom of the bucket.
I may mount a 1.5 or 2" thick x 4" wide "strip" right behind the wear bar, recess the holes for 5/16 or 3/8 bolts thru the bucket.
The poly strip is about 70.00 .
I was even thinking of going to the local saw mill and getting an oak 2x4 to experiment with.

Hey guys, save your self some money. Plastic deck lumber is HDPE and it costs a whole lot less. Around here I can get a 1X4X12 for about $26.00 and a 2X4X12 for about $38.00

Just make sure you get the 100% plastic boards, not the ones that are a mix of plastic and wood.
