This is a question that's been asked in past years, but I'd like to get some fresh feedback on
backhoes for a JD 790. So...

Which is preferable 3-pt or frame mount?

I've found four manufacturers so far: JD #7, Woods, WoodMax and Liberty?

What have you found to be both reasonably priced, durable, functional and a good fit?
Is a thumb worthwhile?

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Thanks-

Frame Mount is better than 3pt mount, JD no longer has the JD #7, I tried to find one a while back, and my dealer also said he couldn't find one, there are a few now again up for sale used. I ended up buying a new Woods BH70-X, looks way better than the JD BH, has a good frame mount, and got a mechanical thumb, cheaper than if I'd found a JD BH. Rosseels Farm & Garden Supply, Inc. had the best prices, customer serivce was great, included shipping right to my driveway, and it was painted green!

I'd only put a frame mounted backhoe on my 790. The 3pt hitch of the 790 was not designed for the lateral forces generated by a backhoe. My :2cents:

is the hydraulic pump big enough on the 790 to run a BH or does you need a power behind/beyond kit as well??

Power beyond on a 790 is mainly for running a backhoe. I have looked at several and personally like the Woods BH70-X. There is a sub-frame available for the 790 and it hooks up to power beyond. The JD #7 backhoe ran off of power beyond and was an option for the 790.
