Here is what I bought today. A Ford plow. I don't know if it is a 14 or 16 inch it measures 16 the way I have the tape measure but 14 vertically. It has a Colter on the left plow but not the right (not sure if this is common) it also has a wheel behind the left plow. Little bit of rust but I think it will clean up nice. I don't know about the pieces coming off the trailing edge of the plows, they aren't on every one I have looked at. I am sure they are original because they have the Ford logo stamped on the back. There is some sort of adjustment screw on the drawbar I have no idea what that is for and I'm not sure it shows up in the picture ( I was trying to beat the rain unloading them). Also not sure about the short chain behind the Colter. The front of the right arm that the plow is bolted to has been torch cut and to some extent (older cleaner work) the left one also. I imagine this was due to a clearance issue.

The other implement I am not even positive what to call it, either a springtooth or a cultivator. It measures 86 inches across guessing. Its considered a 7 footer. Overall it appears in good shape. The threaded bolts that hold the springs are fairly rusted, but hopefully serviceable. Could definetly use a new paint job. Came with 2 new teeth in a box also, but all the ones on it look good to me.

I have been looking for some good ground equipment for a while and did a u turn on these literally 3 miles from my house. Still wanting a good disc and some other stuff but I am just buying what I can when I think the price is right. I managed to pick these up for $400
Thank in advance for any information you have. I already have the massive plowing thread saved.

You picked both up for $40??? At least somebody was lucky today. The plow - the piece coming off the trailing edge is called a share and yours have extended shares. I have no idea what the little chain is for and by turning the screw on the drawbar you will see what it does. The other is some type of spring tooth cultivator - its designed to break up the soil, whatever its called.

A little sandblasting or sandpaper and some paint and you have some great implements. Great find.

I'd say for $40 you didn't buy them, you stole them. Probably worth more than that in scrap. If both wheels turn on the plow I'd hook it up and make a few test runs. That will clean off most of the rust on the parts engaging the ground.
For the cultivator, spray the moving parts with a good penetrating oil and give a few raps with a hammer. If they free up hook it up and drag it around the test run areas from the plows.
Then you can sandblast and pretty them up with some paint.

We would call that second one a "field cultivator". It's similar to a chisel plow except (a) not as heavy duty, and (b) it has 2 rows of chisels/points/sweeps instead of the normal 3 you would see on a chisel plow, and (3) it has the springs that allow the shanks to move in response to rocks and other obstructions.

Those chisel points on it now are for breaking up ground, but they don't do much for plowing up weeds. You can put "sweeps" on it also for cultivating ground that has already been broken. The sweeps come in various sizes from 6" or so up to 12" or more. The wider sweeps are better for plowing up weeds.

For your tractor, that 7 footer is gonna be all your tractor wants. Probably more than it wants. You can remove the 2 outside shanks if your tractor has trouble pulling it as currently configured.

$40 for those? I think I hate you. :D

Good pick up. I've got a ford plow just like that but it's missing the colters. Great little plow that works fantastic.

I would say you done pretty good to get both of them for $400. You basically got one of them almost for free. Are you planning to at least make the necessary repairs and paint them both?? I think they will "clean up" pretty nice, and make you really proud to own/use them.

Even at $400, that's still a good deal. I would have happily paid that.

Yes! I plan to keep them as long as I have a tractor appropriate to their size. I already figured I might have to size down the cultivator as Poopdeck Pappy mentioned. I plan to sandblast and paint them. Not sure of any repairs needed. That's kinda why I posted this. I know I need to free up the springs and grease an few things.

Very nice find. I can't wait to see them cleaned up and ready for soil. Congrats!
