Timberwolf tw3 n tw hd pto log splitter

The hydraulic pump on the TW3 is a PTO mounted single stage gear pump
supplied by TW that is connected to the Power Take Off of the tractor.

SO............................ any load placed on the pump will automatically be
capable of stalling the tractor- BUT the relief valve should be properly set
to prevent that from happening.

If it is not set to relieve the stall pressure it is in need of
adjustment AT THE OPERATING TEMPERATURE OF 170-180 DEGREES.

Thats why I heat my TW5's oil tank up with my salamander for an hour
on average even in the summer time.

If any one is interested in the race track diagram for heating your oil
up in your log splitter much quicker please e-mail me and I can send
you a copy of it.

Setting the relief to accommodate their 16hp recommendation, would have you setting it at 1100psi. Which would make it a 7 ton splitter:confused2: Still not sure why they think a 16hp engine is enough??

That splitter will work on your 16 HP tractor, but will stall at a lower pressure.

I believe the HD model has a 5 in cyl.

You do know most companies fudge their figures.

Yea, but TW wasnt known to be one of the really bad ones. And fudging them that far.....

Sure, the splitter will work even with a 5hp motor. But being realistic here. 1100psi on a 4" cylinder would disappoint me. An that would be based on their recommendation.

And I still dont understand why they are calling for 30hp on the HD model. Same 21gpm pump. Cylinder size has nothing to do with it. Actually the larger cylinder would have more splitting force at the lower psi, and would work better (just a little slower) than the 4" non-HD model.

From talking to the guys at TW, they implied they knew the PTO HP was less than engine HP.

If you maintain the 2200 psi on the valve relief, at about 10.5 gal flow rate, the 16 HP at the PTO is going to give up the ghost.

J_J, your saying that with 26 hp at the pto, I can't run the tw3 6 sec cyc @17 ton n tw 3hd 9 sec @20 ton?

That's correct. You can run full speed, but at lower tonnage by adjusting the pressure relief.

If the pump has adjustable flow, you can run full tonnage (pressure) but at a slower speed(flow).

But you cannot have both with the lack of HP

It will not work.

You need a bigger mule or an 220-480 electric to PTO converter reduction
gearbox for the the pump drive.

Granted it is if you are working out in the bush its problematic but at home
with a 220-480 disconnect and plug it would work with a tractor.
