We have an old (late 40s- early 50s) 3 tower brush mower. The spindle bearings have given up. Unfortunately after grooving up a spindle. We thought to weld up and have turned down at local machine shop but far to gone for that.

So, since we have no idea what the manufacturer is. Not a tag left on it. We are thinking Woods (or predecessor).

Asking the forum to help ID or give me some ideas on who to look at for spindle replacement.

Much thanks for any idea and even looking.

A good machine shop will be able to cut the old shaft out and weld in a new one for a reasonable price.

Fully aware but if we can find an upgraded spindle assy we would probably pursue that route as all the towers show immense wear. The main castings have issues. (IE the bearing cups just aren't as snug as they should be)

Yes our local machine shop can and will work with us.

Ok so here is an idea. If you can't find the manufacturer or a parts supply then see what would adapt from a different manufacturer. Just tossing out ideas and no doubt you've already considered this.

I know Farm King sells a complete assembled hub and spindle for their finish mowers. Part number 906339. FARM KING Finish Mower Parts - Barnes Implement & Tractor Supply Co.. Part number 49 for $129.99. The price is reasonable and it might be something you can work with.

You would have to change the style of blade. The Farm King spindle is made for blade that has a rectangle shaped hole. That can be worked around too.

I changed mine to accept John Deere blades. They are the same price as the Farm King blades but last considerably longer. All that needs to be done to the spindle is the square part lathed off till a John Deere blade slips on.

Another idea that would work is a Meg-Mo system. MEG-MO Systems | Lawn Mower Blades, Mower Blades, Blade Sharpening, Tractor Blades, Lawn Care

Look at the 4 bolt pattern on the deck . Take one off and see if it matches up with a 4 lug hub assembly off a trailer axle . I had a mower , a hustler , the bearing assembly was a trailer hub bolted to the deck , I just dont know about the spindle . But if I am right it wouldnt be hard to get a spindle fabricated at that point
