So what should I look for when I check it out and what would be a good price on it assuming it is in good working order?

Pretty much what everyone has said. Gearbox being the main thing, as it is the most expensive and most difficult to repair/replace. Make sure it is smooth, and not alot of end play, etc. Make sure metal parts arent broken, cracked, twisted.

I am not a good judge of price cause I am a cheap-skate on implements. I bought my 306 for $200. but it was in rough shape. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/220111-bushhog-306-fresh-painting.html?highlight=

But considering a new cutter built that heavy is likely 3x's that cost, then the price is probably fair IMO.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the information. I am going to take a look at it this weekend.

Thanks again.

As a parts manager for a Bush Hog dealer, I'll say that any part you might need for that 306 is available. Blades (756BH) and blade bolts (63607) are still used on current models (and in stock here). Aftermarket blades and tailwheel assemblies & components are out there, too.
I've never seen replacement blades for a Fred Cain cutter featured anywhere, but I admit I never had anyone ask for them. There's probably more 306's still in use than however many FC 6' cutters were ever built. Series 5 Metric drivelines are rated for 47HP @ 540 RPM.

That's good info, and it's good to know the parts are still available.

I used to work at Servis (Rhino) many years ago, and I know those old Servis and Bush Hog cutters were made to take a beating and last forever.
