I just picked up my V-2800 Fransgard winch today and it does not have a lower pulley on it like the bigger Fransgard winches (why is this ? ) I seen on the web it was an option on the V-2800 where as on the larger Fransgard winches it is standard.
Does it act like a double block and tackle for bigger logs ? I am wondering if it is something I should purchase? If I had it would it make it easier on the clutch on the winch ?

Thanks
Hickory

My neighbor has a v-2800 and his has the lower sheave on it. I think it just gives you a lower point of pull. To increase the capacity you would have to double the line. Like put a snatch block on the log, run cable out ,through the block and back to dead man on the winch.

Whatare you referring to as "sheave" ? What would be the advantage of having a lower point of pull ?Now that I think about it I remember a friend of mines father has a larger Fransgard winch and I remember him saying he would use the lower pulley to winch the logs in and then move the cable from around the lower pulley and just have it running throught the top pulley for transport. I am wondering why the lower point of pull would be an option on the V-2800 and standard on the larger winches.

Sheave= pulley

Term usually reserved for winch pullies and associated with hoisting and winching.

Pretty nice winches on those tractors. I'd think that to use the lower would also mean pulling from a lower point which could be less destructive to the three point hitch assembly. Think of the potential pulling power to the weight of the tractor.

The primary purpose of the lower pulley is for drawing logs out. It is real easy to bring the front end off the ground when pulling from the top pully. If you are pulling from the top pulley and a hitch gets snagged, you can easy flip the tractor over.

The top pulley is best for winching in, butss aren't as apt to dig in.

Having two pulleys is the nicest feature of the Farmi winches, particularily the cable hook up on the lower pulley (Swing pulley to left and slide cable in.)

My Norse came with only one pulley. I keep the pulley in the top mount and have attached a clevis to the lower mount. When I'm pulling out I hook the snatch block (which I leave on all the time) to the clevis.

Guys,
I am having trouble with this V-2800,when I hook it up to the 3pt hitch it does not have hardly any clearance to carry it.I have a JD 4400,the V-2800 is is the right horsepower rating, but I am wondering if the compact tractor is too small in height to carry it and have adequate ground clearance.I had the pto shaft hooked up etc and it had telescoped/slid all the way in and when I lifted the winch it busted the seal where the PTO spline comes out of the back of the tractor(that is going to take some $$$ to fix).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Bob,
That makes sense to me. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm sure exactly what your problem is. With your PTO shaft being to long you will not be able to pick the witch up to full height. As you found out it will bind.

Does it get high enough without the pto shaft connected?
