I'm in the market for log spiller . Which is better a 3pt or a engine type. I ve been looking at tsc at thier 22 ton county drive engine model and at their 3 pt model for $749. Any suggestions please. Thanks

I bought an engine powered flywheel splitter (DR Power) because I use the tractor FEL to move the wood, and wanted to be able to loan it out. It's so fast (up to a cord an hour) no matter what I will only use it a few days per year.

This took 10 minutes.

I prefer the engine driven splitters because it doesn't tie up the tractor for other chores, I also use the backhoe for lifting extra large rounds onto the splitter to save my back with a log grapple. I'll add that these can be tipped up to split but we get some big logs up here and that bending over rolling those big rounds around isn't for me.

I'm sure others can add to this list:
3pth:
Pros:
Cheaper than a engine unit.
Easier to move (tractor) to locations rather than hitching/unhitching a motor driven unit.
Easy, just right, height adjustment.
Doesn't involve maintaining another motor that probably only gets used a few times a year.

Cons:
Ties up tractor
Puts hours on tractor
May lower to ground so you don't have to lift big pieces, but doesn't flip vertical

I'm biased toward the engine powered splitter because I already had mine when I bought the tractor. I got it off eBay, free shipping, no tax, and had to assemble it. Saved a bunch and it is towable. If I need to take it further than outside the shop door, I just hook it up to the ATV. I always add a little Seafoam to all of my fuel cans so my stuff can sit for a couple of months at a time if needed.

They both work fine , just depends on if you want to tie up your tractor every time you split wood. mine is gas engine I updated to electric start after 15 years of hard starting in cold weather , added a simple hoist so there is no bending over and splitting large pieces on the ground. they are fun when equipped right ! Enjoy !

I like the engine model, I hook it to the mule and back wherever I need to split. On that rare occasion when I have help, I pull the splitter with the mule and the trailer behind the tractor

Stand-alone splitter for me too. I like the portability of hooking it up to my ATV and easily move from cut pile to cut pile and split.

I have the TSC 22 ton engine driven splitter. It performs flawlessly. I take it wherever I need it and the tractor is free to drag logs, and help with bucking and such.

I also like the stand alone splitter so I can use the tractor while I split.
