2014 LS U5030 55hp open deck
Here is a pull type JD disc that looks in good shape. The blades all look good, the frame looks solid and the tires don't look that old. Looks like a older disc and someone called it a W8, not sure if that is what it is. Didn't see any kind of tag on it. I was told its not a bearing type. I think they said a pillar block. They say its a 8' disc. Any opinions if this is a good disc. Would it be to big for a 55 hp tractor? Any thoughts on it versus a 3 pt disc? Here are some pictures of it and any idea what its worth? Thanks

Certainly not too big for 55 hp. It's worth whatever buyer & seller agree on.

Looks like a BW8 and a 55 hp tractor should handle it just fine.

I found out I could get it for $1900. Would this be a fair price or is this to high? Is this a good solid disc or would I be better to buy a newer type disc with bearings? Thanks for your input.

"Here" $1900 would be about $1400 too high.

Look around for comparables in your area.

Where is Ken Sweet when you need him?

No one sells pull Disc Harrows quite like the W8 any longer. It does not appear to have adjustable gang angles so it is a "finishing disc" to follow the plow. Not versatile.

Pull discs take too much room to turn around, which means too much field space wasted in headlands.

They are difficult to transport from one property to another.

Bearings are not an issue; the design is.

A Google search brings up nothing and that is a statement in itself.

. . . Pull discs take too much room to turn around, which means too much field space wasted in headlands. . . .

Depends on how much land you have. If you're disking small food plots, yes. If you're disking 40 acres, no.

In general, pull-type discs are heavier built and plow more aggressively than 3 point hitch discs, which have to be built lighter to accommodate 3ph limitations.

No, they're not. You simply extend the hydraulic cylinder to lower the wheels mounted on the rockshaft, and off you go.

Besides being heavier and cutting better, as a rule, than 3ph mounted tandem discs, pull type discs have another advantage over 3ph mounted discs: You can set the hydraulic cylinder at the height you want to plow and you never have to mess with it again. The disc is unaffected by the tractor's rear wheels going up and down in and out of undulations, so you get a more consistent depth of cut.

All that being said, I wouldn't pay anywhere close to $1,900 for this one.

Thanks Pappy,

I grew up on a rice and soybean farm and all we used way back then was pull type disc. I know there are pros and cons on both pull type and 3ph. I'm only going to be using it on some initial land clearing (maybe 5 to 8 acres) then after that mostly food plots for hunting and a little gardening for the wife. I'm sure either would do fine for what I'm wanting to do, I just thought the pull type may do a better job then the 3ph.

Thanks for all concerning the price. I've seen several larger ones on tractorhouse that are BW or BWA type for anywhere from $1300 to $4000. I know this one is 8' and didn't know what the worth is. I found a Tufline/ TL43-92020 which is a 3ph for $2500. Its 3 years old and used about 25 times. looks like brand new. Just not sure what that is worth either.

Thanks to all for your advice.

Tom: From the specs of the TL43-92020, it looks like it would be just about perfect for you. I don't know the pricing on a new one, but I suspect it's probably in the neighborhood of $3,000 or perhaps a little more. So $2,500 doesn't seem completely unreasonable, but it's probably on the high side considering it's used. I'd offer $2,000 and see where you wind up.

Maybe Jeff will come back to this thread. He is very knowledgeable about tandem discs in general and, in fact, he owns a Monroe Tufline tandem disc. Here's a link to a very recent thread he posted on it:
