I am looking at buying a 3pt hitch logging winch to go on my Kubota B2920 tractor. I have a bunch of firewood to get out that are either small trees or cut up larger trees. I want a winch to be able to get to places that are to hard to get to to hitch a chain on directly to the tractor. I went to my local dealer who sells Farmi and Wallenstein. They recommended the Wallenstein FX65 winch over the Farmi 290 because of how it hitches onto the 3 pt hitch arms. Does anybody have the Wallenstein and use it on a small tractor in the 20hp range? Does anybody have a different brand they are using on that size tractor? Looking for advice what to buy that would work for me.

someone posted not to long ago about there wallenstein breaking cables. snapped 2 or 3 in the first year if i remember. I mentioned i guess there was a reason for the price difference in that Farmi used 5/8 and wallenstein used 7/16.

how about fabing up a mount for a winch (hydrualic or electric) on the top of a box blade. (unless your into spending $4K on an attachment...personally i can buy like 20 years of firewood for that price and just have it delivered in a pile with no cutting and splitting involved)

I think your dealer is steering you right!!

Anyone "breaking cables" on their Wallenstein has some "operator error" going on!!

As far as I'm concerned, Wallenstein FX winches are as good or better in every respect, compared to the other brands AND are made closer to home! (assumeing you are from the USA or Canada)

Just make sure your winch has STEEL cable on it, NOT synthetic wire rope...

SR

BTW, FX65's cost a LOT less than 4K!!

Fx-65 is the best size for your tractor. I think it weighs about 400 lbs and is for a class 1 3pth like your tractor.
I have one that I run on a 65 hp PTO tractor. In my case, I wish I'd bought the fx-90, for the extra ballast weight and width (not because I've needed extra pull)
The fx-65 has been great. I leave it attached most of the time. I would never use one that doesn't have the cage, some Farmi's do, some don't.
The built in tow hitch is convenient too for hooking on a trailer or wood splitter behind it.
Once you have it, You'll find a 100 uses for it beyond logging.

Curious to know what the problem is with the way the 290 fits the 3pt hitch ??

They are both fine winches.

They said that the pins on the Farmi 290 are set a little wider than the Wallenstein FX65 and with my B2920 it would be harder to make it fit the arms properly.

I dont have a wallenstein winch, but I have ran a fransgard 7600lb winch on my kubota b7800 30hp tractor for many years. No issues with it on that size tractor for me. I do firewood commercially with it about 300 to 500 face cord a year winching and skidding out tops of the woods. Tractor has held up fine, but there is some knowledge you have to use on how you set up the pulls with these 3ph winches or you WILL break your tractor, so just use common sence and keep it within the work limits of your size/weight tractor and you will be fine.

I am upgrading to the larger mx5200 kubota tractor to run my winch only due to my high production demand.

Your dealer is right on track with the fx 65 being sized to your tractor. Wallenstein makes good equipment with the pieces of them I own and have run. The farmi is also a good winch. Dont understand about it not fitting as good like you state???

Good luck and stay safe!

I just measured my JL290. Your lift arms have to open with at least a 26" clearance between them to fit. Just so you can measure for yourself. I don't know your tractor but 26" does not seem extra wide for a cat 1 hitch.

I am not saying Farmi is better but I would argue with anyone saying that Wallenstein is the better - if you know what I mean. Farmi has a very very long track record that is hard to beat while Wallenstein is a relative new comer. To me both winches are made for small tractors and will give you the same great capability.

I went back down to the dealer this afternoon and did some measuring. The Farmi JL290 is actually about the same width at the lower pins for attachment, maybe an inch narrower. The Wallentstein FX65 is 12 1/2" from bottom to bottom pin and the Farmi is 9 1/2". The Wallenstein is 26" from bottom pins to top centerline pin and the Farmi is 22". The Wallenstein is taller with 55" from bottom to top of top pulley while the Farmi is 51". According to the spec sheet, the Farmi is about 100lbs lighter. The only thing that I don't like about the Farmi is lack of bottom pulley. Gordon, do you notice any problems pulling not having a bottom pulley? Now that I have done the measurements, I am not sure why the dealer recommended the Wallenstein over the Farmi for my small tractor. For my B2920, I think the Farmi will fit better. I will have to call and find out why and see if I can't get a better price, I think they are high.
