LS R4047H
Thoughts? Just cutting hay field type grass once a month or so... Think the tractor can run it sufficiently?

Flail mowers really eat up the HP. An 8 footer would be a strain for 40 HP.

I ran a 6' Alamo/Mott flail mower behind a L3650 and it did OK on stuff that had been shortened with a BushHog-type rotary mower.

My M7040 had no problem with it, but that is a lot more available HP.

The only way to know is to try. Others may have more specific recommendations.

I also read somewhere else that Alamos need more HP, any particular reason? Larger rotor diameter? Heavier rotating assembly?

Your tractor is hydrostatic right? I think you will be able to keep it at the necessary rpm, you will just have to go pretty slow.

About your mule and your mower choice,

Who makes the LS tractors? Please forgive the question as I have not kept up
with who makes what since Massey Ferguson stopped making the MF135 with
the hydro boost transmission.

Most all flail mowers sold today have a smaller diameter flail mower rotor(tubular steel with weldment's for the knife stations

There are a handful of poorly made imported flail mowers being sold here in the United States that would not survive the
EU safety standards tests.

We reclaimed old pasture with 12 foot goldenrod and other brush with a
gear drive Ford Jubilee and a 7 foot JD25A finish flail mower and kept it
maintained for years with a low height of cut being 2 inches.

It is not so much whether your current mule can manage the work its
the amount of mowing you do to knock it down.

If you have patience and perhaps a fender radio you will only have to be sure that
you have spare belts and grease it regularly and have spare Kevlar V belts.

If you are traveling too fast you will burn up belts period, if you take
half cuts you will do fine with it until you get it all knocked down and
then you can re cut it to your hearts content at a quicker pace.

Once you have it down low you will not have to fight with it as you can
mow in spirals and save fuel and time by eliminating the need to brake,
back up and change engine speeds at the end of the row.

It is more of an issue of time as you have not mentioned how tall the brush is.
