Rotary Cutter Decision Time for Bush Hog / Rotary Cutter

With a 59 hp tractor, I wouldn't even bother with a 6'. I'd go either 7' or 8' at a minimum, or the batwind as someone mentioned above.

I have a BH 276, which is a 6', 1000lb bushhog. I wish had gone with a 7' for the +15 acres I have to mow.

We have quite a bit of land we mow, so we have a 10' in addition to the 6', but for 10 acres, I wouldn't spend the money on anything bigger than a 6'. I looked at a 7' and it's really bulky, I like the twin spindle 8', but the price bump just wouldn't be worth it to me anyway.

I have found over my years of a lot of mowing I am always doing more then the mower will do. That is why I went with the heavier gearbox.

I agree with going with an 8' twin spindle instead of a 7' single spindle. A medium duty 7' mower is really long and hangs way back there. I think an 8' twin spindle requires less HP than a 7' single spindle does. But I think the minimum for an 8' twin spindle is about $4,000, a lot of which is probably because of 3 gear boxes instead of 1.

Yeah, the twin spindles do get pricey, I about stroked out when we had to write a check for our Woods DS1260 a few years ago.

The reason I was going for a 6' mower was to be able to scoot around all the trees on the property. I am clearing all the smaller trees on the property now but plan on leaving a good amount of the larger trees. I would love to speed up the amount of time on the mower with a larger mower, but a 6 footer seems like the best fit. Can you get reasonable cut quality with these as opposed to getting a finish mower and wearing it out in a short order?

Thanks.

Steve
