I have a NH TN75 with an older nh 918H flail.92 inch. New knives on it. Flail is counter rotating motion. my tires R1's fully loaded.

I am curious if I lowered my tire pressure would itt have less of an impact on the grass? the grass is not cut at the same height where the tires are tracking. when all done mowing about two hours later you can see my wheel tracks. The grass is a little taller

Good morning flyingcow,

I certainly hope all is well in your part of Aroostock County.
Here in the Finger Lakes we are being blessed with cold front
cooling down the Southern Finger Lakes.

Surprizingly we have corn that is 3 plus inches tall and has not
been killed off by frost YET!

Don't mess with the rears on your mule. You will have much better mowing job if you
adjust the rear roller to lower the height of cut to two inches then level the gearbox with
your top link and you will have a fine patch of grass/sod and your tire tracks will be gone
in a couple of days if not sooner.

thank you very much I will try that.

about a week ago the northern part of the county got close to 5 inches of snow.in the last 3 or 4 days it has been in the mid eighties and very muggy. I have not seen any of my farmers corn break ground yet.

Too early to build raised beds/hill for spuds and now too late for winter wheat.

Have you had any new reports of the Maine Wild man Lately?

I am done burning wood for the season and waiting on the bank to approve my
new coal stoker boiler loan now.

I'm going to be into the rough ground if i lower to two inches. It's at 3 1/2 +/- inches now. That height seems to be the best for my ground. The unit is level like you mentioned. This is heavy timothy mixed with other weeds and such stuff. I'll drop down a half a gear and see if the helps. It's about 3.8mph, i'll bring it down to 3 or 3.2.

You don't mention how tall you let the timothy/weeds get before you go out and mow. Flail mowers are potentially capable of taking down stuff on a sliding scale; from saplings and brush to golf course fairways. In other words, you have a machine that will produce an end cut anywhere between a bush hog and a grooming mower. Since you mentioned knives however, that suggests your flail may be set up closer to the grooming mower end of that scale - likely as a finish mower. Hammers work the rough end, various knife combinations work the middle. My guess is that - set up like a finish mower - you're allowing your timothy/weeds to get too long before you go out and mow.

Question: is your mower offset? or capable of being offset?

In my experience, tractor tire pressure is unrelated to the finished cut product.

You're right they're knives not the hammer style. 128 of them.

grass is between 8 to 10 inches when i cut it. sometimes less. i've got a wedding reception that will be done in this field, labor day wknd. trying to keep it mowed tight and mulching in the grass.

It is capable of being offset, but it's not at this time.

I usually bushhog this field, but just got this flail up and running last year. Like the looks of the field better with the flail.

Thanks for the input guys.

cut the grass sooner at say 5 to 6 inches
