Howdy,

We purchased a used Ford 22-124 flail mower which I believ is also known as a 907 model. After mowing with it a few minutes, the belt burnt off. We dismissed this occurrence to dry rot and purchased a quick spare. I don't believe it's an exact match 54" 5/8 belt as opposed to the 56 7/8 belt or 57" belt (it seems that folks use different sizes and I have another question about that). Anyway, the belt is on and will mow really well and then it will start to slip/squeal/smoke and not mow. after stopping it, it appeared that the tensioner spring wasn't holding tension and may have been occasionally rubbing against the belt. How can we best determine what's causing the problem and could it be something more serious like a bad bearing.

I'm new to tractoring so any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

With the belt off, can you rotate the rotor by hand somewhat easily? If not you have something named, binding or bad bearings & that is your problem. Same for the idler wheel. Check the gearbox & output shaft as well when the belt is off for good measure, although that is before the belt & wouldn't cause problems toasting the belt.

In a flail the belt acts as a sheer pin or slip clutch. Either the belt is yo loose, or its doing its job & protecting the rest of your power train because of problems downstream.

Belts come in different configurations. Is your belt the proper one?

You need the right belt period,

the flat idler tensioner pulley acts as a shock absorber as well.

The wrong belt did the dirty and then crapped out as the
spring could not work the way it was supposed to by applying
pressure to the flat side of the belt.

You need a B53 belt most likely for this flail mower.

You also need to spend time reading our flail mower thread to
avoid flail mower problems in the future.

OH, and remember the flat side of the belt rests against the
flat side of the snubber pulley.

Thanks for the reply. I plan on getting the correct belt on it and giving it a shot. Other than the Let's talk about flail mowers mega thread, do you have any other suggested threads for me to review as I need all the help I can get :)
