YANMAR EA 2400 Subcompact
Hello Fellow Members,

I have recently bought a Yanmar EA2400 subcompact tractor, which is 24 HP at engine and 15 HP at PTO. I am looking for a Chipper and Shredder to attach to the PTO. At a recent Field days, one of the reps from a reputable tractor company suggested that it will put a lot of strain on my PTO and will destroy the Shaft mechanism even if I used for an hour or so. My question from the learned group is to find out if this is correct and what are my alternatives. The PTO Chipper /Mulcher is by a company called HAYES ,an Austarlian company and the product is excellent. The price is about $AUS 2195.00. A 5HP stand alone chipper/mulcher is about $1600 and a 10HP is abour $3200.00.

I would love to get some feedback from you all about this. i have seen many U tube videos of people using chippers on their Kubota and JD small sub compact tractors with PTO work out.

Please give us your experiences.

Thank You,

Not disputing the advice you were given, but I operate a rotatiller on my Ea2400 with no problem. I use it on hard clay soils with the odd blade damage caused by a rock. I would think that this would be at least as hard on the pto as a wood chipper. I imagine that your pto would be far more soild than a shaft on a stand alone 10hp chipper.

Which tractor company gave you that advice? Thank you.

John

I am aware of two types of PTO wood chippers.

1. Direct drive PTO-type, I think this is the type you were warned about. The chipper flywheel is directly attached to the PTO and has four blades for chipping.

2. Belt driven PTO-type. The flywheel spins from a belt driven off the PTO, and spins twice as fast, requiring only two blades.

If PTO strain is concern then the belt-driven chipper would be easier on the PTO since there is no metal-to-metal contact between the PTO and chipper flywheel.

Example of a belt-driven chipper that may work with the EA/SC2400: ECHO Bear Cat | Products

If a rep told me that the attachment would destroy the PTO, I think I'd be in the market for a different tractor. One that's built right.

Err....I don't think anyone has accused the Yanmar EA/SC2400 CUTs as not being built-right, this sounds like a general assertion against the use of direct-drive PTO wood-chippers. I personally have not heard of any Yanmar PTO failures from wood chipping or anything else.

G'day Chris Ramon,

I have the same tractor as you and am interested in a mulcher/chipper. Would appreciate any feedback on what you bought and how it went, please.

Hi Chris, Hayes bought their chipper from a factory near me, I know that factory, I suggest you choose their BX42S, because your tractor is small, Hayes' BX62 is too big for your tractor. Also if your budget is enough, you can think about their BX42B, it is same as Woodmaxx's TM-86H, I mean Woodmaxx bought TM-86H from this Chinese factory too. But I don't think it is Woodmaxx main product. It only add a self feeding roller on BX42S. Anyway, it depend on what and how many woods that you need to chip.
